    Default Machine Disposal

I need to abandon the Hercus No.3 tool and cutter grinder I purchased a couple of years ago for the reason that the machine is worn out.

Yesterday I enquired about the price of scrap cast iron. $150 per tonne for a complete machine and $200 per tonne if the machine is smashed into small pieces and I deliver it. Cost of a hire trailer from Coates is $35. The No.3 might weigh 250 likos. Selling it for scrap as a whole machine means I'd make $2.50. I could try to unload the thing on Gumtree but given the wear it's not an attractive proposition for any potential buyer in the market for a T and C.

I'm thinking that I'll salvage the handwheels and table and slip the remainder into the next council skip I have delivered. To buy a slice of cast iron the size of the table ( if I could even find a slice that big ) would cost me probably 200 bucks and to buy a handwheel from Hercus would undoubtedly cost me a bit more than 15 cents a kilo.

Can anyone suggest an alternative ?

If I lived closer Bob I would be around at your house in a very short while.
I've always wanted to be a West Australian skip diver. They find the best stuff sometimes.
I think you might be on the money if she is that badly worn. Richard used a machine table to assist him with scraping duties on the 'Wonder stand' and the handles would always come in handy. The head unit can also become anything that needs bearings and a shaft if you cut it down enough.
Still don't like to see it happen, but...

You could always take a photo of the machine before make it appear in pristine condition, then smash it, then take another photo and post it on the Home Shop Machinist forum..

it would make a good letter box stand adjustable height for the posty
seriously if you have the room i would keep it
the stand would make a great grinder stand
and as you said the hand wheels and table and spindle could be useful

You've got me worried now, Bob. My own unrestored No.3 has been used a lot, but it didn't occur to me that it might need to be condemned.
What's made you decide yours is too far gone?
You might find buyers for various bits, it you want to part it out. The main column stand should be attractive as a solid base for something.
Maybe I could buy a boxful of the smaller bits.

Part it out. Mine is badly worn as well but I'd buy the grinding head and maybe some other bits light enough to ship off of you. Serious offer, I don't like the grinding head on mine and having a spare would be really good.

They aren't much of a T&C grinder, but mine is better than none at all.

Do you have council clean up days over there?
If not, after stripping of what ever parts you can sell/repurpose etc, put an ad on gumtree for free for scrap. Someone will come and collect it.

We have council clean up days every 4 months or so and on that weekend there is a constant stream of old trucks with trailers cruising the streets picking up any scrap metal. One young bloke runs a local scrap yard and he has a truck (toyota dyna or something like that) with a tray at least 6 metres long with high side gates on it plus a boggie trailer about the same size. I had a heap of scrap steel once and I helped him load it. That was about 1.30 on the Sat and the truck was almost full and the trailer was about 1/2 full. He told me that was his third load for the day. Theres a council clean up somewhere in the area every weekend so he does ok out of it.

You are all barking up the wrong tree here!

I see a great opportunity (read: excuse) to make a CI foundry and then you have a great source of CI for your first, second, third……….nth pour!

One door closes and another one opens. Life is great!

Funny you should mention the kitchen Ray. I was allowed the buy a replacement today for the 3 on one condition, a new kitchen for my wife. Closest the 3 will get to the kitchen is when it passes the window on the way to the skip.

    Hi Bob,

I'd put it on the back verandah and call it "Industrial Art". Surely your grandkids (if you have any) would love playing with the handles?
