Thread: Machine inspection required can anyone help? Qld/NSW coastal border

Ray the table is 24X24... Cross slide travel is 30 inches, vertical travel on this machine is 36" as it has a 12" extension, and I believe longitudinal travel is 30 inches... Traveling spindle travel is said to be 26 inches in two stages of 13 inches... Facing head is 16" in diameter, top speed is 400rpm.. It is a 1942 made machine.. 5hp main motor with forward reverse clutch..

The machine looks good cleaned up and sounds great,are they levelling screws on the base that I thought were hold down bolts?

Yes they are levelling screws, but they are hollow, and the hold down bolts go up through the middle of them...

The gear box is dead quiet at low RPM, except for the clutch.... It has a rattling noise in there, which I am guessing is a worn clutch fork... It sounds like one very worn bearing up in the head where the drive shaft is.. I would say it will be a plain deep groove ball bearing.. Should not be hard to get to depending on how hard the vertical drive shaft is to remove..

A lot of the noise also comes from that big steel belt guard vibrating and acting like a drum...

I measure the wear in the bed to be less then 0.1mm.. So it would be within my capabilities to rescrape the bed ways should I feel the need... Another reason why I went after this machine, being that reconditioning the ways would be feasible for me to do here...

Overall I am happy with it... I know I paid more then it is worth, but value is int he eye of the beholder.... As an added bonus the person that lifted it into my shed, wants to buy my Hercus 260, which I was selling anyway now that the 10EE is going...
