Default My "New" Old machine vise-2

Yet another old thread i'm revisiting. https://www.woodworkforums.com/f65/my...e-vice-155574/

I had need today to use the vise with Mlle to cut the gib for the Mars lathe compound slide. But the vice was still in bits.....

I didn't do any flash work, one day i might scrape it all, but for now i just needed it usable. A de-burr, some locating lugs in the bottom and a new set of jaws and i was on my way. I remachined the jaw registers, then made 2 new jaws from 12mm MS. I cleaned up the back side on the shaper and then machined the faces in place (with thanks again to BT for the large slot drill). This also meant i had need to use the coolant on the mill, by gosh it can pump some out! A 28mm cutter going 200rpm can also throw it a long way.....

The machining came out really well, the finish is fantastic, better than i thought possible straight off a slot drill.
I took a skim off the fixed jaw, which was higher than the moving one, and it was ready for use. I will probably fly cut the top of the vise once the Wohlhaupter is up and running, it is still in bits in the process of being cleaned....

    Hi Ewan,

    Nice work with the vise!

We are in the same boat, I've looked at horizontal bandsaws off and on over the years, but always failed to take the final step... we make do with conbinations of a 9" angle grinder and recently a plasma cutter, and a slowed down vertical bandsaw...

    ...anyway...

Your post reminded me of a dormant project to build a saw attachment for the shaper.... time to resurrect I think..

I am thinking of something like this.. Shaper HackSaw on steroids

Might be worthy of a new thread at some time...

    Regards
    Ray

Shhhh. Don't mention you didn't scrape it.
People here would scrape a gate hinge if they thought it needed to be within 0.003mm.
