Default A Singer in Victoria Road

I was in Melbourne over the weekend and while in Richmond with my daughter I spied this in a shop window. I knew a few members were interested in sewing machines so I pressed the Coolpix up against the glass. No idea what this machine was used for.

Looks like an early hemming machine, forerunner to an overlocker and/or blind hemmer.

Perhaps if you contact these people they can enlighten you

    It's a Singer 71-112.

It does top corded button holes. Whatever they are

And yes. I sew. I'm on my second industrial machine.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

Thank you for that Mr Archer, SWMBO was most interested to see there was a machine for that as early as that.

Her reply was that she had to do them by hand and it wasn't an easy job!

I googled a bit last night to find out more about corded BHs and it doesn't look like a fun job.
I've done a bit of searching over the years for spare parts for sewing machines and the range of machines that Singer manufactured was astonishing. There is a machine to do pretty much everything.

but no lathes....if they were that good they would've built lathes and milling machines and shapers and and all that other good stuff..lol

would be great to have a lathe or mill with all (gold leaf) motifs over them.

    Hi,
Machine tool manufacturers came to an agreement in the early days to leave that sort of thing to the sewing machine manufactures and gun smiths and not even start on that path.
    Regards
    Hugh

I remember seeing some Singer hand tools back in the 80's. From memory I think they came from Brazil. My only google search hit came up with one for sale on gumtree.

    Default Superb photos

AB, you've done it again. I tried to take some shots of possums in my back yard feeding, with a flash, and all I got was a black screen.

It must be the way you hold your tongue.

Shots of the Singer are fantastic, sewing machines are in a league of their own, I love them.
