I have noticed over the years Macson lathes changed the bed profile...

Old ones all flat bed, next up was a single V for the tailstock, late ones were the usual two V, two flats.
Light red, the colour of choice for the discerning man.

This local lathe looks very similar to the OP model.

Yep, I agree. Looks like a newer model. It seems to have both line shaft and electric motor drive as standard (unless it is a realy good retrofit). The one that our club also has a modification for an electric motor. At a guess it may have been done in the 1970s.

No, it's not just you Stu. Can't ever recall seeing a neat conversion from line shaft drive to self contained electric motor. My brother in law, a farmer, has a big lathe that was "modernised" by his father. Same aesthetic.

Yes we had a fuggly conversion on our John Lang lathe 10 hp motor overhead driving direct to a Thornycroft truck gearbox 5 foward 1 rev.It was vee belted[5] to the largest flat cone pulley that had a shrink fit vee sheave fitted.A real gut buster to work and no trouble getting a sweat up.It used to blow fuses if it was in low gear so we rigged up a car clutch Austin a90 between motor gearbox also hydraulic so could use it along the saddle travel. worked well so many jobs. No 5 eaton 2 speed axles used to break the noses off.from overloading. We used to machine out the old nose a new piece of duraflex welded and shrunk in,then new thread cut.Replacement 30 yrs ago 3grand for a housing ]new]our repair 200 dollars.we also bored a cylinder of a Bulldog tractor line bored with the cylinder anchored to the saddle. Not a pretty picturs but it did the job well the frame[o head was made from old truck chassis rails.Fond memories John.

I also looked at it an thought it looked out of place. I am now even more curious to find info on it.
    Cheers
