A little bit of galvanised steel tube
I'm trying to source a place around south/east Melbourne that could be bothered selling about a metre of 7/8" dia. galvanised steel tubing to fix Mum's clothes line. Also if I cut and drill through gal' steel, I protect the steel with what paint

Just remember that steel pipe is sold by the nominal inside diameter... So it is probably 1/2" pipe what you want... In a light wall section..

Thanks heaps .RC I didn't know that, I've cut off a small section for comparison, hopefully it's not too hard to match

I'm actually peeved off really to tell the truth, Mum's 80 odd with plenty of ticker left. She drove to Bunnies and they sold her a retractable cloths line, with no mounting instructions and no mounting fixtures and guess what, the pole it's supposed to connect to was an OPTIONAL extra. Apparently you're supposed to ring Jim (as in Jim's mowing, Jim's whatever), fairdinkum! So for $189 she got nothing really. It's going back too, pronto, the old one is built far more solid with no plastic bits. Just wish she'd tell me these things, all that's happened is one of the lines broke and the arm that the lines connect to is a bit rusty.

You can get replacement arms and quite a few other spares for the older Hills line if that is what it is.

It seems to me that even the good old stand by,galvanised pipe is not what it used to be.I guess it overseas sourced as well and we are paying the price.
Should any of you be contemplating a new clothes line , particularly the painted fold up type.Be warned.
The item in question was a replacement for the venerable Hills model which was a bit sad after a tree branch reshaped to an unusable from.
I had to replace the damm thing in turn, after a year as it as it rusted the micro thin metal from the inside out.
Maybe it is where I live as everything rusts faster than else where.
The home made replacement is 50 x 25 1.6mm dura gal welded and cold galled with a gutful of what passes for fish oil these days.
I fear the results of buying cheap is that the reputable companies that made items that lasted are being driven out of the business and we soon will have no alternative other than to purchase the same cheaply made crap that needs regular repalcement that keeps these bar stards in business.
Support Aussie made before it is too late.

My oath Grahame, that's why I'm repairing the old clothes line, it'll still outlast the crapola that's available now.

I use it in my external spiral staircases etc and its good quality galv.use cold gal paint (spray pack) and then bright zinc or chrome spray over the top,it'll last forever.

Thanks for your offer Danielhobby I'd take it up for sure if I was closer but its good to know in case. Thanks also for the tip on measurement/gauge, ignoramus here, pretty obvious now why tube/pipe would be gauged in the inner dia. hey but the outside dia was more important ok
Stustoys thanks for your suggestion, Bayswaters a fair way away but the link you gave: SteelSolutions Australia also had under their banner: Springvale Steel Supplies, could be a goer? Cheers
