well i had a white shirt on when i looked at it and its much dirtier than the photo shows but it seems mostly years of sitting there without being used but time will tell when i get it home
i tried the x & Y handles seems very little backlash but maybe its just dried coolant stuck on it

Looks like a Pallas mill..

thanks rc ... well not that i could see i checked the lathes.uk site for pallas and yes there are some similarities but the back gear set up is defiantly different some of the power feed levers and castings look very similar

Here is the Pallas mill I used to own... It has since been scrapped since these photo's were taken many years ago.. It was the first machine tool I ever owned... This one was stamped "Foreign" indicating it was not made by Pallas but was badge engineered.. Made by another company and Pallas put their tag on it...

yes RC from what i can see of those pics theres definately a similarity the door on the left hand side contains the gears for the table feed i think and just below the right side opening to the flat pullies would be the back gear setup
i wonder where you found the foreign markings so when i get it home i can check

I'm sure its an older American made mill, there was one on ebay several months ago. I can't remember the name but it was on lathesuk.com.uk - I thought Van Norman but I checked and that's not it.

im leaning towards RC s idea see how the table is bolted on and the lever in the middle is exactly the same the door on the left side is the same but no names or markings, most of the control levers are the same shape
the door has a wooden shelf containing change gears for it think the table feed
the table slots are different tho at the ends
