Default General meeting today with GQ

I can report that Greg has now fitted the 3 phase motor to his Deckel mill. My godfather, what a monster, I would not like to have to lift it. A tad under 2HP I believe.

And the Good Lord said, "let there be light", and you could see for bloody miles and miles, yep, GQ has finally rigged up some more lighting in the workshop, and what a difference it makes from walking around with miner's hats on.

The main purpose of my visit was to try out his 3M finishing wheel. Wow, it cut through the rust on my Arboga mill handle with ease. The finish it left was only one step from polishing. Will definately have to get one.

We also discussed varying timbers for use as a tool box, Myrtle looks pretty good to me, has a nice reddy colour, and is fairly hard approaching Jarrah.

Greg has some lovely timber tool boxes, all well made and showing signs of loving care with the occasional dings.

The grounds surrounding Greg's are akin to the forests up around the Dandenong's including a few stands of bamboo. Greg suddenly spotted a snake about a foot long, putting me into a panic. On closer inspection it turned out to be the cat with it's tail quivering in amongst the bamboo stems, highlighted by a shaft of sunlight, right on that spot.

Despite the scare, (maybe it was deliberate) I will return shortly.

    Ken

Ken, I forgot to show you the remains of the two h.p. motor from my lathe. It weighed 112 kg, 550mm in diameter. I shall try to retrieve photos from my failed hard drives one more time.

Ok, ok, maybe Greg will take a couple. My camera efforts leave a lot to be desired.

Where's AB when you need some good shots? oh yeh, Perth.

Obviously from a time when the std horse was a Clydesdale and not the puny little pony that has been used in more recent times.

Yeah, I'll say. It was a DC motor, I think originally designed as a lift motor as it had a European variation of the Ward-Leonard electronic drive system. I kept the brushes-they are the size of my thumb!

The lathe has a 1/4 hp cooling fan motor which tells me things got serious in there when it was all cooking. As all of the original electronics had long perished when I bought the machine I scrapped almost everything.
