Melbourne - Availability Of Steel Metal Plate
Hi,
I have just finished phoning around both scrap dealers and steel merchants in the Northern area of Melbourne and only got one satisfactory reply. I am looking for a piece of steel plate 1 metre square (15 - 25mm thick) and the quote I got was for $400 - $600 depending on the thickness.
Does anyone have any idea if there is someone who could better that price? What I want it for is as the working surface for a welding table. Btw, I have also tried EBay but there was nothing available.
Thanking those in advance of their replies.
Cheers
MH

having it 1200mm on one side might make it cheaper....a standard size is 1200X2400...With it 1000 X1000 they have to cut it on two sides and have some waste...
If you got 1200X1000 then they only have to cut one side, no offcuts so might be cheaper...

Hi Metalhead,
In my new profession as an estimator, I have watched steel prices rise some 38% since last June.
While I not have quoted on steel plate for a while, that sounds about right ,you are not being ripped off.
Its them Chinese buggers mate, they are buying it all up and the price rises.
