Where in Melbourne could I buy something like this spring clip?
My daughter is building some weird sound generating device utilising bitty electric motors for a project at uni and she sent me a couple of images of a clip mounted motor. She is chasing the clip. She reckons the motor, a 3V DC affair, is 26mm in diameter.
Does anyone know a shop they could recommend that may stock a range of this type of clip? She had asked at Jaycar and the friendly sales person told her to do her own research, a bit hard when you don't know what something is called, hence the call to her old man. Beck lives in Northcote.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Bob

Bob,
Could try a number of places. I know them as "Pipe Retention Clips" (at least it is a starting point) I would try a electrical wholesaler or plumbing store.

PS pass this on to Beck.
I have seen an installation with wire and motors at AEC festival in 2010... see here 216 prepared dc-motors / filler wire 1.0mm, 2009 - Ars Electronica 2010 - YouTube
I'll see if I can dig up the name of the artist.

I would try the closest Bunnings Bob. If they don't have that exact clip, they might have a snap-in bracket for a 1" curtain rail that might do the job? Or a snap-in clip for 1" poly pipe (although that might be 1" ID)? I'd be amazed if they didn't have something.

Hi Bob,
It looks like a clip to hold a broom (or similar) or used in a pair to hold a tool on a peg board. I would look in Bunnings in the section that has hooks, catches, eyelets, hinges and other such items.
OR, since you now know the dimensions, you could machine a couple up for her!
P.S. Half the people who work at Jaycar wouldn't know if their #### was on fire. I'm tired of educating them every time I go there to purchase something!
Cheers,
Simon

It's a "Terry Clip".
Should be common enough at most hardware shops etc.

Thanks Lads,
I'll send her a link to this page. I had thought of Bunnings and the use of clips for tool retention but I hadn't considered irrigation fittings.
She's going to love the flailing wires Josh. Her idea is spinning arms striking various materials to create a variety of sounds, backed by sound recorded on an endless tape played in a salvaged casette deck. The motors are potentiometer controlled to provide some fine tuning.

I have always known them as terry's Tool clips and when I Googled it I found Element 14 claim to have them online. They are based in NSW however do sell online as I have purchased electrinic bits from them.
I will also try and attach there list of there stock.
Well I think I have done it
Good luck

Bob.
There's a place not 400 metres from here called Bell Springs. You can see those clips about half way down the products page.
Products
It would be no trouble at all for me to pop around there and pick up a few. They have a stock range in the front reception. I expect they are only a few dollars each.
I used them on the back board on my lathe. They are strong enough to hang live centres off.
Regards Phil.
(On edit) I knew I had some left over. And I managed to find them. There's 4 sitting on my desk she's welcome too. Happy to post them.
I just tried them with some 1" stock. They wouldn't want to be any larger as its a bit loose. But I think they will be fine once they are screwed down. There's a bit of bend in the mounting face. Once that's pulled down, it seems to give them a bit more pre-load.

Another option - zip ties and zip tie bases - more flexibility in received diameter and they are an off the shelf item in a Bunnies electrical aisle.

Or you could wait until Saturday and I can give you some.

Josh, Chris, Simon, SWK, Ray, Phil, Master Splinter and Gregor, Thank you.
Here's my plan. Procure a motor from Beck on Friday, check the fit in Gregory's Terrys on Saturday and if the Terrys don't fit, head out to Bell's in Thomastown on Monday checking out Bunnings on the way.
I had suggested cable ties but Beck has some (another) weird idea of mounting the motors on some cork / balsa concoction. Bit like trying to bundle up junket with a string.
It's hard when you have a shed full of all the right gear and the kid that needs to use the stuff is gear-less in the Tool Capital.
Bob.
edit. And DJ, thank you too.Last edited by Anorak Bob; 15th May 2013 at 10:09 PM. Reason: DJ slipped in before I hit enter
