    Default lapping film

I bought 100 discs of adhesive backed Al oxide 3M lapping film on ebay for almost nothing. The grade is .05 mic

It seems to polish the HSS edges rather than hone . Maybe a coarser gragde would be more effective ? Mike

    Hi Mike,
Lapping, honing, polishing and grinding seem to mean slightly different things to different people. I'd say 0.5 mic would be fine for finishing up an edge but pretty useless for anything else. Its said the the finish on the work cant be better than the finish on the tool(though I'm not sure this applies to turning in a lathe)
Try out your new magnifier and see how much difference you are making, that always makes me feel better at least.

Discs? they are for a grinder?

Ive been in the abrasive game all my life, & noticed you had purchased the Alox lapping film, & wondered what you were going to use it for.
Checked my Tech notes from 3M & 0.5 micron is about equal to 10,000 grade ie Ten Thousand Grade abrasive.
So what you have was probably designed for optic work.
I would not bother trying to hone lathe tools with it.
    regards

    Bruce and Stuart

Yes it is a very fine grade and it would be suited for optical work

Stuart do you want the film ..I have no use for it ? The sheets are about 3" diameter , with a sticky back on them that you peel off. MIKE

    Hi Mike,

Sure I'll gladly take them off your hands. I could mount them onto my scrapper hone and see how they go.(pitty Al oxide is no good for tungsten carbide)
