Fingers crossed for the larger one and they keep the smaller table/desk for their own use. They dont do metrology anymore but might in the future.

Hi Gary, Unfortunately the videos will only be for the people who attended the class.. After all they paid $300 to learn this and they would only be rightly annoyed if people got what they paid for, for free....

Either would be a terrific size to have. I'd take the one with the best surface/less obvious signs of wear. And help them make room by grabbing that nifty looking gismo (comparator?) against the wall. It's going to be hard to strike the right balance between grateful acceptance and pillage.

Hi to all,my first posting after an email to j hovel. am sorry that i missed that scraping class and for sure will be a starter for the one next year 2012.I also see Phil here is a member from Ballarat.Best wishes to all and congratulations to all who did participate in this old art of scraping. my old boss mentor and teacher was telling me as a young Italian tradesmen apprentices scraped for 2 years before they even turned on a machine tool.he was a craftsman in the old sense.''to quote him'' ''if you can cut with a hacksaw, file with a file, scrape with a scraper measure with a micrometer, weld with a welder, chip with a chisel, drill with a drill my boy you can do any thing in metal.'' oh i forgot and hammer with a hammer'' hope to post soon and am so happy have found so many like minded people.

    G’day Greg.

Thomastown is full of monumental masons. Proximity to Fawkner cemetery. There’s one I’ve noticed on Mahoney’s Rd. F Hallet & Sons. If you drove west from the pub, they are about half way to Sydney Road on the right or north side of the road.

They must cut a lot of Granite, they have a huge yard with stone stored in it. You can see it from the road.

Web site shows some automated cutting machines. I’d start with them.

Thanks Phil. It turns out that the group buy is oversubscribed already. I have two alternates for the ten we are potentially ordering. I'd need another two guys to ship another skid of five plates to allow one spare.

    Greg

On edit: the U.S. supplier does not have sufficient stock to add to the order economically and won't for another five months, so the group buy is now closed unless someone of the original group backs out.

If I had my way I would take the whole room off their hands.Tthey did give me a cylindrical square though, the high tolerance one that one of the apprentices used to knock his job down in the milling vise. Seems he thought it would be better than a rubber mallet.
Apprentices, God love 'em....noone else does!
Seems the school is getting a new 'Engineering Mechanical' wing which means new machines etc.
Naturally I put in for some of the old ones but the school doesn't deal with disposal any more. They get a dealer in who buys the lot and re-sells at grossly inflated prices.
Naturally I enquired about a possible donation of some select machines and surprisingly it wasn't met with raucous laughter.
Even have my legs crossed now.
One other thing, I have posted the rest of the photos from the scraping weekend

Just looking at those photos-great job Phil. Does that seem like it was more than two weeks ago to anyone else?

    Thanks for the photos Phil.

The two weeks before sure seemed to past a lot slower than the two weeks after. Hopefully I'll be starting on my first scraping project soon.

Speaking for myself, I don't care at all if other people download the videos. Not like I'm going to doing big downloads given my satellite bandwidth anyway.

Back home tomorrow and time to find places for the truckload of stuff I dragged back.

    Hi guys,
    Going a little OT here,
I've just come up with an idea for adjustable stroke on my sawzall power scraper. As far as stroke length goes the plan is 1.5mm to 12mm in 1.5mm steps. What do you guys with power scrapers think?

    Thanks

    Stuart

I do not think there is any need to go smaller then 3mm...

Ditto. And certainly no more than 12 on the high side. I tried 15mm for awhile but have settled down to 10 or so asa max stroke.

Once you get to fine scraping you can make a smaller radius tip and try for that mythical 40 ppi.

Ok, Thanks guys, 1.5mm is gone. 1.5mm steps ok or would 3mm steps do?
If this idea works there maybe a MkII with truely adjustable stroke length.
