metal lathe info wanted
Hi all: I have a chance to buy a 9 inch series 1000 Utilathe metal lathe by Standard Modern of Toronto. It's from about 1970 but has not been used much. It looks like sb clone but not sure. Anyone familiar with this? Hows the quality? What sort of used value? Thanks for your time, Wayne T

Hi Wayne
I am guessing that this lathe may not have have made out here to Australia under that name. Possibly it is a re badged lathe. I haven't heard of the name here in Australia in my searches of lathe info.Perhaps one of the other users of this forum may be aware of it.They appear on Google and it looks like they are used in American industry so they can't be too bad.Google up uklathes, there may be some mention of them there.

Standard Modern is a very well regarded name. The company changed hands some time ago, but the machine is still being produced in Mississauga. One of the gurus on the southbend group on Yahoo has one, along with just about every serious current and antiue lathe. His name is Dennis Turk, and he is in Oregon (look up Turk Precision)-he says good things about them, and would probably make time for you if you called him for a first hand report.
I think there's a school in BC that's getting rid of three of these things right now, barely used. If I was there I would grab one-they are reputed to be a great all-around lathe, and are a whole bunch better than a Chinese thing of similar size.
Good luck
