Metal Rolls
Greetings Chaps, Just recently I acquired a very solid Lathe bed. Its only the bed and is the flat type. It is about Hercus size has no name and I suspect that it was made at the RMIT. I seem to remember a pattern from my time there. I have thought of using it as a base for a set of heavy duty metal rolls. Can any one out there point me in the direction of a set of plans a set of rolls. I have seen plenty of rolls but it would be nice to work to a set of plans. Yours 4-6-4

4-6-4, Ernie Winter (ejwinter.com.au) has a set of drawings for 12" rolls (Martin Evans design) you could scale it up to suit. It's the geared variety. Also Model Engineers Workshop Manual (ISBN-13 : 9781857610000) by G.H.Thomas has an even better design for the same size. Both use 20DP 20 Tooth gears. The GHT version allows for complete cylindrical rolling starting from flat sheet. The Martin Evans design requires that the start and end of the sheet is radiused before rolling for best results. Capacity is 1/8" max for copper sheet.
