    Default Micrometer Stand

After struggling taking micrometer readings of small parts for some time now, I got around to making a micrometer stand.

The brass base is an old door knob that I rescued from a dumpster and the wood base came from an old bed slat scrounged from another dumpster. The base is finished with funiture oil.

I super glued a thin piece of high density foam rubber to the rear jaw to ensure the micrometer will not slip out of the clamp.

The wood base was added because the brass stand would tip over if accidentally knocked hard and I had visions or my beloved micrometer taking a dive onto the concrete.

The stand tilts the micrometer at 45˚ but, on reflection, a tilt of 30˚off the horizontal would have been better to more easily take readings.

Nice work. I think I'm going to give up saying "I'm going to make one of those one day" and just make a few of the things on the lst already

Thanks for the comments. Like most of us, my list is pretty long too but this simple project is a quickie that will make measuring a little easier and it's well worth the effort.

A micrometer stand is something I keep telling myself I need to get ... normally every time I'm doing the juggling-jig Nice job, sadly my list is far too long, hence I will buy an el-cheapo $15 commercial one from CDCO or similar. Alternatively maybe Greg Q can look out for one for me in HKG as he's doing his rounds (hint hint) so I can get one next time I'm up there.

I will do scouting and/or buying for you Pete. Avoid the cheapos though, and get a name brand one. I bought a pretty dark grey one with the blue
knob. It took a lot of work to be just OK for clamping the mic. I gave it away and bought a Tesa.

Oh I think I know the one you're referring to. Hey thanks for the heads up, as I possibly would have bought one of them.

Buying me a Tesa stand is very kind , but no need thanks anyway. I just thought you may be able to keep an eye out for me and note the store name/address for next time I'm there. I keep forgetting to look when I'm there. As you know I'm doing the Singapore sling the next 6 weeks, but no hurry to buy this as I don't get more that 48 hours at home in that time anyway
