    Default MIG Gas for a learner

    I purchased a Unimig KMN180 to teach myself MIG welding. What gas should I get? I'll be seam welding a car, making brackets and engine mounts, etc

    An argon/co2 mix like "argoshield". Best bet it to ask your welding gas supplier.

    You could also go straight co2, but it is a little more difficult to use (but not impossible) on thinner steel/sheet (eg car panels).

    Can also work out cheaper if you buy the cylinder.Buying co2 is easy, but not many do argon/cos mixes (Supagas is one possibly???).

    There's a couple of versions of argoshield, for light panel work the 'light' version is recommended, I think the mix is 93% Argon, 5% CO2 and 2%O2. I think most of the gas suppliers have a similar mix. The oxygen in the mix is meant to promote 'wetting in' of the edges of the weld bead.

    Hey mate

    Goto Gasweld and purchase a Speed Shield cylinder. It's an Argon, CO2, and oxygen mix.

    Heaps cheaper then renting.
