    Default Thanks

    Hi Folks

Thanks very much for your advice.

I had a word with the guy who made my tools and it appears the tool I posted in the original post is made out of something called "gauge plate". He informed me this good enough to be hardened and used for cutting purposes. Does this alter the advice given in the previous replies?

Anyway, he recommended I have it chrome-plated in order to protect it and said that this wouldn't add much if anything to the dimensions, given I was worried about a couple of sliding adjustable parts no longer functioning should a layer of chrome be added to it. Should I be worried about this?

An alternative he suggested was to clean regularly with WD40 and store them wrapped in an oil-soaked cloth.

He also mentioned spraying them with some type of spray used on electrical components. I'm not too sure about that one though.

Any views on the above...you're opinions would be appreciated.

    Kindest Regards

    Ricky

    G'day Ricky,
If that bottom plate is gauge plate, no wonder it was expensive!

I don't know the thickness of the chrome, and in the sliding parts you would have twice the thickness.... if the guy that made it recommends it then I'd investigate that. The chromers will be able to assess whether or not it will affect the function. Make sure you see an example of what the finish will be like before getting it done, there will be a range of finishes.

Another option is to take it to a reputable armourer and have it 'blued'. There has been a thread on blueing on this forum in the metal work section recently. This may be an option. Blueing will resolve the rust issue once and for all.
    Cheers,
    Clinton
