Default Mill power feed break down.

My Hafco mil broke down again today, thats 4 times since I bought it . The power feed has given up after only a few jobs. Has not done more than a few hours work since I bought the mill.
    It's a Ansong AS-135 .
Another piece of crap from Hare and Forbes.
Dose anyone know where I can buy spare parts for it ? Please don't suggest H&F I don't want to speak to them ever again.
It was going ok and all of a sudden smoke started to come out of it. I stopped it straight away. It was not doing anything hard only a very light cut at slow feed.
Pulled it apart and a wire to the motor has been rubbing near the comutator and shorted out .
I am thinking of buying a new unit from America that runs on 110 V and buying a step down transformer . Has anyone done this and how did it work out?
It seems way cheaper than what they want here.

I bought my Y and Z from the US and just use a step down transformer. The mill I have now came with a 110v X axis power feed standard with a transformer that does the 24v light and the 110v power feed.
You will get the best price from here, the 2 cost me $110US in postage.
135 Lbs Power Table Feed Bridgeport Milling Machine X (eBay item 360314593099 end time 05-Nov-10 14:53:17 AEDST) : Business Industrial

150 Lbs Power Table Feed Bridgeport Milling Machine Y (eBay item 370450144774 end time 06-Nov-10 09:14:13 AEDST) : Business Industrial

150 Lbs Power Table Feed Bridgeport Milling Machine Z (eBay item 370449807935 end time 05-Nov-10 09:15:18 AEDST) : Business Industrial

Not sure why the postage is higher on the last 2 as they have always been the same price.
They have a lot of other cheap tooling like 123 blocks for $8.99US that you may be able to have slipped it in the box.

Ultra Precision 123 Block 1-2-3 Blocks 23 Holes .0002" (eBay item 390255754716 end time 01-Nov-10 05:57:31 AEDST) : Business Industrial

For spares give this place a go.

    Hi Retromilling,

I'll double check for you, but I'm pretty sure the X-axis feed (on my HM52) is already 110V as standard. It's probably the same on yours. So you might not need a step-down transformer.

    Hi Ray,
I think his is 240v as they were back then.
The last 2 mills I had were 240v power feeds, but this mill came with a 110v one. I always wondered why H&F put 240v ones on the machines but only sold 110v in the shop? Those last 2 mills only had a transformer for the 24v light as I investigated them to hook up the Y and Z power feeds. It had provision for the 110v tap but no terminals or anything inside. This mill has the same transformer but has the extra taps for 110v, 90w I think it is.
I would say these mill are now coming from another manufacturer because as you know they now come with a slot in the quill, a 110v power feed and there are probably other small differences as well if they were compared side by side.

    Hi retro,
it will be an asong, we (hare and forbes) carry some parts for them. If its still under warranty we should fix it if it just simply broke down in service.
Like I said in posts about asbestos brakes I cant speak for every person in every branch.
If its out of warranty we can supply some parts for it.
I will honestly say, and you can choose not to beleive me as I suspect you will, I have not come across this before.
But this is just me, 1 person in one branch of the company.

Perhaps as dave suggests get a replacement from the USA if its out of warranty. Exchange rate is up, good for direct purchases in small shipments.
The Align units we stock and sell are of Taiwanese manufacture and very reliable should you choose to purchase one of those, however it would appear from your post that you will not be dealing with Hare and Forbes anymore.

I apologise, for what is worth which I imagne is nothing given the sentiment of your posts, for any service or product you have received which does not meet your expectation. I know, apologies are not worth the time it took me to write this, and they dont get your power feed working again, but all the same there it is out on a public forum.

I am thinking I should bow out from this forum completely, as anything I say will be viewed as biased ######## with the objective of trying to pinch the hard earned from other members given I work for Hare and Forbes. Never my intention.

You are from Brisbane and I can't comment about Brisbane they might be good.
However in Sydney they don't seem to care . No one is having a go at Brisbane .
It is out of warranty now and even if it was in warranty they would not be much help they have still not got back to me on a previous warranty issue with my lathe and now it's out of warranty but they found time to send me the asbestos warning !
They sold me a new lathe with worn out second hand parts on it . Someone ripped off my new parts and replaced them with their worn out or damaged stuff . Tha'ts why I am angry . Can you blame me. I told them this and sent them photos of constructional faults but they have done nothing for me.
The top slide was hanging off the lathe because it had not been replaced properly and the gib was so bent and damaged it could not stay in the v way , it was full of " metal shavings " and had obvious wear marks . The handle on the power lever was so cracked and the cracks were full of black grease and garbage it must have been 20 years old , The cross slide nut was worn and had to be crushed and adjusted up to the max to take out the horrible slap , you could see on the locating bolt that there was two different size bolt impressions where it had been in another lathe .
My motor was also hanging off the lathe all loose and the motor sqeaks. Belt pullys are " rusted " Obviously swapped because it squeaked. Other parts rusted.
I did mange to get a warranty call on that and they allegedly put in a new switch but it just started squeaking again about a month later . I don't believe he changed anything , they just put some dry lube on it and reassembled.
When I tried to point out some of the other issues to the serviceman he just shruged his shoulders and left.
I did get good help from George on one issue with my mill and he is the only one down there that seems to care but the big issue that they have neglected to get back to me on was out of his hands and with Matt.
Even if they did get back to me now I have no confidence that the lathe would be fixed right . I could end up with a bodgied up worse lathe than I have now .
The right thing to do when a new product has been interfered with and the original parts stolen and possibly contaminated with asbestos, would be to replace that product .
I saved for a very long time to buy this lathe and mill and they just took every bit of pleasure right out of the experience.
I would only go back to them if I had no other choice or if an act of God made them suddenly do the right thing.

Thanks Dave , The transformer looks the go.
I will buy that cheaper one and that transformer . Install it and then later try and convert the old one to a cheaper board and motor system , that I can replace myself.
Will not happen for a while as my 3 year old Samsung fridge gave up and they can't seem to fix it , in the end I had to buy a new Aussie made Westinghouse .
That was $1600 down the drain that I can ill afford. Tried to sell it to secondhand dealers and they were not interested . They said if it was a Westinghouse they would buy it working or not. Food for thought. 3 year old double door fridge gone to the dump .

Just had a look and the recalled model is Samsung 757L side by side SRS758DP.
They sent a team out to take out the old and install the new one all at their cost.

    Hi Retro,
I am very dissapointed at the service and responses you have received from Sydney, and I completely understand you loss of confidence in the Hare and Forbes company as a whole.
If I received what you did I am sure I would feel the same. I cant explain it, I am at a complete loss as to what is the right thing to even think about saying.
I offer a complete apology if I seemed aggressive in my previous posts, I had read your issues but did not comment, as I thought the right thing would be done by you.
I cant offer any compensation, all I can offer is this, pm me if you would like me to get a set of asbestos free brakes for your lathe. I cant promise a timeframe for you to have one of our techs replace them for you as I have zero to do with the day to day running of the Sydney branch or its service staff, but I may possibly be able to despatch a set of brakes direct to you at no charge for you to replace on your machine. This is the least I can try to do on behalf of Hare and Forbes. Its not that we are tbad people, its that the brake issue has been placed laregly in the hands of our service techs and service department.

With regard to the power feed issue, I would follow Daves suggestion. Exchange rates are up, good time to buy out of the states, you will get a unit that is in service in many thousands of applications and should be able to find good manuals for the units in question, should you ever need them.

Thats ok you don't have anything to apologise for . It sounds to me like Brisbane is run way better and that is good to hear. I also should tell you that the saddle of my lathe has several structural CRACKS in the steel . Dave J from this site has seen them in person.
I sent photos to Matt and I told them I would be away for a set amount of time gave them the dates and they said they would arrange an inspection. Nothing happened. This was my third attempt at showing them the condition of the lathe but I just gave up chasing them. They know about the cracked saddle so why have they not contacted me. Now I have a $7000 " toolroom quality " machine that is unsaleable and possibly contaminated with asbestos. Would you buy it ?
I don't want to bad mouth anybody and I spent $ 11500 at H&F beacuse I thought they were the top company in the business . Money that took me a long time to save and I am still paying some of it off on a loan. There was nothing faulty about my money . The balance on the loan is probably more than I would get for the lathe if I sold it right now to someone who new what they were looking at.
I have fixed some of the issues myself but the whole experience has left me gutted and dissapointed and depressed.
As far as the mill goes I did not expect a quality machine for the price and I knew I would have to do some fixing. Even though the lathe runs ok now it is the condition in which it was sold to me that is upsetting me because it was $7000 and advertised as " Tool Room Quality " .
I hoped I would have a lathe to be proud of.
I had the impression that Sydney did not believe what i was saying because they constantly said " we have never had any issues like that with this lathe"
I though when they actually see the photos it will change their minds and it seemed that way for a while when speaking with Mat but nothing happened.
Thanks for the kind offer but I don't feel comfortable accepting your help this way. If it comes from Sydney with an apologie I will accept it.

Your are right but I have a bad back from injuries recieved in the Vietnam war and the fridge was just too big to move into my shed without risking two weeks in bed or in hospital in traction. So it was arranged for the delivery people to take it away.
