    Default Mill vice rebuild

This is a bit of a follow up from here https://www.woodworkforums.com/f65/my...e-vice-155574/

Firstly, Michael, I havn't forgotten...i have some ply earmarked and will get the grinder boxed up this week. Really.

Since i now have the Blohm i though it time to finally give this vice a once over. Oddly enough the big Archdale radial arm drill at the ANU grays auction had the same vice on the table. Again no makings. But it did have a swivel base. I might have to make one myself, but i think i'll need the LeBlond to swing it.

Anyhow, i skimmed the top of the vice jaws flat on the grinder, and then flipped it over and did the base.

Then i took the moving jaw off and skimmed the base of the vice. This was more than a skim, it was all over the place! The coke bottle just happened to be around, and the reflection looked good....

Once clean i could see what holes i was going to fill, and finally after 12 months or more, the CI BT sent me was put to use. The plugs are around a .0005" interference fit, with a little loctite added for good measure. Gotta love the spray of loctite from the hydraulic action of putting the plug in! Just need to do the big hole tomorrow and back to the grinder.

    Cheers,
    Ew

I can't remember if you got some mag parallels with the grinder or not?

    Hi Ewan,

So... let me think, does this rebuild project mean I can hang onto that Glacern vise that's sitting here on the bench?

I like that you are getting immediate value from the surface grinder, everything from here on on will be mirror finish, and micron accuracy... gotta love it!

    Regards
    Ray

No. they have moved up to very close to the top of my to get list, along with an angle dresser and grinding vice.
I'm not sure how to use them though with no lamination's to line up with??

    Hi Ray,

For as long as i can hang on to the Waldown high speed drill sitting on the floor.....

The problem with this vice is the moving jaw is so long it fouls on the arbor support if i use the mill horizontally with smaller dia cutters. It is also too tall for the parallels i have unless you are machining stuff over an 1" thick.

I thought they might have bumped up on the priority list if you did not have them considering this thread.
They still work as long as the laminations are parallel, the laminations don't need to line up perfectly with the chucks laminations, but it is stronger if they do. My advice is to make some up since you have the technology The real tricky ones to make are where you twist the mag field 90 degrees.

Edit: I have a grinding vice recommendation for you. just need to dig up the details.

    Ew,

I have a small pair of Eclipse magnetic parallels. I can't see myself ever using them so they are yours if you want them. If you think they may be of use I'll send you a photograph. I don't want you thinking I'm palming off sh.t

Here is the one I was thinking of.. I'm sure you can see why I like it as a grinding vice.

AUTOWELL Power vise & Workholding Fixtures – MC power vise / machine vise / tooling block

Actually the one I really like is a Hilma but who can afford them.

As one of those without a surface grinder and no room to put one the standard being raised even higher doesn't generate feelings of love. (More like lots of envy coupled with a little despair ). I think there is nothing for it but to bulldoze the neighbour's house and put a bigger shed up. I wonder if they will object?

    Ewen,

It would be such a shame to "cheapen" a fine German machine with an asian vise.
