Default Need some small milling done

    Hi folks,

First time lurking in the metalworks area - be gentle!

I need some help making a small modification to some metal pieces for my telescope. Basically a hole and countersink drilled and the underside milled away to mate accurately with another piece. Accuracy really is key here as the pieces need to be very square on and quite tight fitting.

I've included some pictures to describe what I'm after. Hopefully they help.

I am also happy to pay for this work so if someone is able to do this for me, please let me know as I'd really really really appreciate it.

    Thanks,
    Af.

    Hi Af
    Are both the parts Aluminium?
I'd be tempted to make a complete new one depending on what parts of the two you really need.
I should also ask how much of a hurry you are in for it?

    Hi Stuart,

    Thanks for the quick response.

I believe the part is aluminium, I would be surprised if it was anything else actually (the whole piece was quite cheap).

What would be the benefit in milling the parts from scratch? Is it just easier to make that way rather than modify an existing piece? Just curious as metal stuff isn't really my area.

This could be made as a single piece. As long the bottom mates the same as the rectangular part and the top is the right size to accept the dovetail sliding into it, then it should be good.

Ultimately I need the guidescope (small black scope) to attach securely to the main scope (black ring around the blue scope).

    Attachment 196006

Problem is that I don't know how to measure the thread size so it will fit the clamshell/mounting bracket around the main scope. I can measure the depth/allowance and provide screws which currently fit if that helps?

    Thanks,
    Af.

Just checking the price of failure.

Do you want to be able to remove and replace the spoting scope without loosing zero?

    That makes sense.

That would be great if it were possible. The mounting brackets will remain screwed to the main scope so the ability to slide on the guidescope and have it register in place would be a good timesaver.

The current dovetail at the end of the guidescope "leg" has a type of registration tag. Whilst it won't be 100% each time because of the screw needed to hold it all in place, it will be close enough to do minor adjustment on right away.

    Cheers,
    Af.

P.S. Hope I'm making sense, I just don't get all the metal lingo for the bits and bobs.

The only real problem that I can see in adapting the 2 parts is in the square corners of your piece to be fitted.
Would these corners need to be square or could they be acceptable with a slight radious.

    Hi Af,

    PM sent

    Hi PC,
My idea was to over travel on the corners on one axis by a cutter radius. I dont think it would be to ungly?

Radiused corners are no problems at all. In fact, it only needs to register on the "length" side to stop it from rotating. The screw will pull it into the centre on the other axis.

    Cheers,
    Af.

Why not screw the dovetail mount straight to the scope?

I had thought of that initially but am reluctant to make any new holes/threads in the clamshell. Also, I don't have the tools to make a thread and can't be without the clamshell for a few days to get someone else to do it.

Thanks Stu. What exactly am I looking at there? The underside of the dovetail mount? I agree that registering against the length would work nicely too.

    Cheers,
    Af.

Yes, with the cutter taken past the corner so the corners of the other part can be left as they are.

Can't drill the mount to suit the existing holes in the 'clamshell'?

    Hi folks,

Stuart was kind enough to mill this piece for me. I wanted to give a little public thank-you to him for taking the time to do this. I really appreciate it.

I'm amazed at how accurately it was done too. The pieces fit together very snuggly and don't seem to move a bit. I'll take some photos on the next clear night when I set the gear up.

    Thanks again!

    Cheers,
    Carl
