    Default Milwaulkee Thunderweb Drill Bits

I picked up a set to look at in a tool shop two weeks ago and noted they were made in Germany and figured they were a pretty good price for a 25 bit metric set. However, I left them be as I had never heard of them and the whole design blurb sounded like a bit of snake oil. Anyway there must be a push on from corporate as I see the Aust online sellers have dropped prices (so I am glad I didn't by a set) Sydney tools $59 and Get Tools Direct $39. For a set of German HSS bits this sounds good, but are they?

Anyone used them? If so for how long and how are they holding up?

Still have my eye on a set of tin split point Dormers but at 1/3 the price I figure it is worth asking about these.

    Hi Burnsy,
I have a cheap German HSS metric set I bought in Aldi. 1 to 10 mm in 0.5s. Surprised that they are split point ones. Quite nice drills.

Does it say "Made in Germany" or "German HSS"?

This is a quote from a post I wrote in September last year.

I bought a set of Milwaulkee metric drills up to 13mm for $54.00 from EBay. They are good drills with split points and ground flats for the chuck to grip in the bigger sizes (4mm and up). I have found them to be quite capable of tougher work. I see that they are no longer available that cheap now. If I buy individual drills now I generally stick with Sutton Viper drills. Sutton is about the only brand sold in this area as individual drills.
Mine are black. I still have every single drill. The 6mm is getting a bit blunt. I am very happy with them and may get another set while they are cheap. There will be better quality available, but for that price they are well worth buying.

Can't recall about what it actually said - made in germany or German HSS but almost certain it was Made in Germany. Will try and have another look. The black ones are the model down from the Thunderwebs which appear to be the top of their range. Black are called thunderbolt or something else.

Yes, mine are indeed called Thunderbolts.

In that case $54 for a 25 piece set of Thunderwebs, including freight would be an even better buy.

Where did you get the info about the different types of drill bits? I could not find Thunderwebs on the Milwaukee website to compare.

First time was when I read it in store comparing the thunderweb and thunderbolts side by side but the blurb on the thundewebs is on all the sellers sites, no reviews anywhere on the net that I could find.

Replying to my own post. It doesn't actually say.
But I took some pictures anyway.

This is the front and rear of the box showing the, I presume, manufacturers address.

This is the 10 mm drill and the makers mark on the shaft. I couldn't get a good picture of any of the smaller drills.

    That's interesting.
Kompernass is not a manufacturer, they are the hardware and other goods trading company for the Lidl discount chain in Europe. What's interesting is that they are in direct competition with Aldi in Europe. So I'm surprised that Aldi in Aus. is selling their goods.
I can't see any indication that they are made in Germany on the packet either.
I had a read of the Wilwaukee brand drill info and there is no indication where they are made either. Only that they are ground to the German DIN Standard....
So both are probably made in China, Korea, Vietnam or Thailand.....
    Cheers,

Thunderwebs come in a Milwaulkee box and definitely had Made in Germany on them, I will try and get a photo from a store.

    Only thing I could find.

    http://www.amazon.com/Milwaukee-HSS-.../dp/B00E0ND4Y2

Couldnt find "German HSS" on anything.

So made in China it would seem, at least for Milwaulkee.

Not that I care where they are made.........I just dislike the "German HSS" on the front with "made in china" on the back.

I think this says it all....61igt9tVD7L._SL1500_.jpg

It says in the window top right:
"En acier HSS avec revetement cobalt pour une longue duree de vie"

which to me translates from French:
"made from HSS with a cobalt coating for a long life span"

Very interesting. I never heard of a Cobalt coating for drills. But Cobalt always sounds good, so it may translate into some improved "shareholder value" for the makers . I would say it's deceptive advertising. A good product does not need deception to sell.
