    Default Mini lathe/mill projects?

    Dear Members,

As a complete novice, I have been teaching myself the art of turning, milling and tapping, using my Unimat 3 lathe/mill. It's far too small, but it's a good teacher.

There's no better way to learn skills, than to make some useful tools. As a learned friend of mine once said, you buy a car to go and buy car parts, and petrol so you can drive to get more parts and petrol, and so on, and so on.

If sufficient interest is shown, I will start a short series of articles, from a novice point of view, on various projects I have completed.

These will include a slitting saw arbor with blade, a scissor action knurling tool, a carbide tipped tool holder, an adjustable edge scribe with vernier control, and the old famous parallel clamps, Kennearth style, not Indian!.

More will follow if there is interest.

Please let me know, I will include pics and drawings.

I have gained a lot from this forum, now it's time to give something back.

    Regards,

    Ken

My Dad's got a mini-lathe, and is muttering about getting an X3 mill.

He's yet to actually do anything with the lathe, so I'd be interested in some starters projects for him.

    Cheers,
    Andrew

I'd definately be interested. Hopefully I will be geting a small mill and a metal lathe in the future as I really enjoy doing small engineering projects (sort of handy when I also teach it)
Have a nice day - Cheers

Interested in all the things you've mentioned particularly slitting saw and arbor.

You say the equipment is too small, there are some amazing things made by that small equipment from what I've seen on various sites on the Internet (and anyway where would you put a bigger lathe or mill, not the sort of thing you can put on wheels and easily move them around if you have to).

Default I'd love to have you share your projects!

I've started a website designed for people new to metalworking called Projects In Metal.

I'd love it if you shared your plans with my readers (you can upload your plans to the site, and they will get posted after being reviewed).

There are already several projects for beginners posted, but I'm always looking for new quality content to share with my visitors.

The plans are broken into 2 categories (Metal Lathe and Metal Mill), and then each category is broken down into 3 subcategories (Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced).

Right now I've got plans for every skill level, except Beginner - Metal Mill. I'm looking for a simple set of milling plans (maybe creating your own T-nuts?), but I haven't found a good one yet. So if you have a suitable project for someone new to milling, that would be excellent! However, I'd be excited with any set of plans you submit, regardless of skill level.

    Thanks!
