    Default Mitutoyo Fakes??

    Hi,

I've noticed on Epay and Gumtree lately there's been a lot of mitutoyo stands come up for sale eg,

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Original-...5a5d1c0&_uhb=1

for pretty good prices. I'm not saying this seller is selling a fake but the price seems too good. I'm wondering if people have bought mitutoyo stands from chinese ebayers thinking they are originals but not up to scratch?

I do remember that someone else may have bought up this topic early. How do you tell a fake?

    Ben.

I wouldn't have thought "made in China" was a good start, but who knows?

    Hi,
Mititoyo has its own web site devoted to identifying ts own products and the different appearance and packaging of the counterfeits.
It should be easy to Google up.

Brazil for the imperial dial calipers, Japan for the Metric. ( according to Long Island Indicator anyway) Of course the famous Mitutogo might be chinese.

There are fake Mitutoyo digital calipers on ebay as well, funnily enough the prices on ebay fakes are often higher than the real Mitutoyo's from reputable dealers.

It is hard to tell, but what would be the benefit of buying a mitutoyo branded base/stand anyway? They may be better made, but I would prefer to spend the extra money on a dial indicator from Mity.

    Some things are obvious.

The picture is blurred just enough to make it hard to identify properly and if you read the listing, there is no mention of the Mitutoyo name. Only appears in the picture and a vague hint in the name on all the pictures, whatever it means. A picture of the rear of this indicator shows what appears to be a plastic rear plate for the dial. A bit of a giveaway I think.

The one from BuyInCoins is called a Mitutogo and it is claimed to be made in Japan. Looking at the finish on the dovetail connecting lugs it is doubtful any Japanese company would own up to making them.

Strangely, the description for each of these items seems remarkably identical for different branded items!

Bryan, several years ago when I was at the machine tool manufacturing exhibition in Malaysia, the local Mitu agent stated that some less precision items in the line were manufactured in China to compete with Starrett who were doing the same thing. Seems a bit of a roundabout way to drag down a respected name but what can one say, but be aware. Also a number of European manufactured mechanical dial indicators etc were also manufactured / assembled in China typically with gearing made in Germany. Reality of today's market. Alan.

I cant admit to a lot of sympathy for well known brand name companies who get manufacturing done in China and then find that the Chinese are counterfeiting that product

    Hi Dean

That first one is a newer much closer knock off* than the second which has been around for at least 5 years.Though the spot facing(?) of the side cover still isnt right the backs look correct to me(who knows maybe Mit has changed that?). Interesting Mitutoyo have been "painted" over in the second picture.

Doesnt help much with the stands though.

    Stuart

*maybe it isnt a knock off at all....... maybe that's a picture of the real deal...that's happened before.. its what turns up in the post that matters.

Mitutoyo make some of their stands in China. I bought one from the importer in Singapore. It's well made. They had Chinese and Brazilian made stands with the same model number. I thought the Chinese one was slightly better.

Theres a high probability that original link is a fake. There is no way in hell that a non distributor like chrismck 1987, could ever get a hold of that for the price. There a $120 -$150 through authentic sources. The margin would be lucky to be %20 percent.
    Here's anothe rip off.

Not all Mitutoyo's that are not made in Japan are fakes! Mitutoyo manufactures in many countries. Brazil, Mexico, China....

Have a look at this press release from Mitutoyo Japan, regarding their presence in China:
    http://www.mitutoyo.co.jp/eng/new/news/2011/11_13.html

Nothing wrong with the practice, if the box and its content is CLEARLY labelled as made in country xxx. Which appear to be the case.

I would assume, that Mitutoyo produces in China for consumption in China (and maybe some neighboring countries). They may not like the idea of these products being sold into high price / high profit countries like Australia. They may (may, I do not know what their policy is) reject warranty claims for such gray imports in Australia. Now, the OP asked about a magnetic stand. Personally, I would not worry about warranty for a $45 magnetic stand. But, again personally (that is just me), I would not buy a Mitutoyo DTI made in China, I would prefer to pay a little premium for the peace of mind of getting the right quality, the kind of quality reputation that was earned over many years by the Japanese factories. Or..... would you buy a Grange made and bottled to exacting Penfold standards in Shanghai if it was offered to you at half the price....?? Probably not, unless it was a LOT cheaper than that and therefore you could afford tipping it down the sink if it was not what you expected.

    HI,

For the price of the item i'd take the chance with it being a fake. I didn't know Mitutoyo made anything in China. It makes sense though, you also see a lot of their other products ie, height gauges, mic's et.c for sale from China sellers. A stand wouldn't bother me, a $300 or 400 height gauge would.
But back to my OP I have noticed a lot of stands for sale on epay and gumtree from different sellers (and not professional sellers) offering Mitutoyo stands at really good prices.

    Ben
