    Default Motor Re-winder in Sydney

    Hi,

I'm currently fixing up my newly purchased Hercus Mill. Its currently running a ASEA 1/2 HP 3PH motor in Star (Y), I was thinking of using a VSD. So I got some quotes on rewiring my current motor, generally all around $500. That's not what I was expecting. Does anyone know a re-wirer in Sydney, or is this the price I can expect to pay?

    Cheers Ben.

    $500 for a rewire?
Are you sure they arent talking about having it rewound?

    Ben,

Base mount ASEA motors are pretty abundant and usually cheap. The motor on your No.O is flange mount. If you find a more common base mount motor of the same frame size but Star/Delta wound, the front end cap can be removed and replaced with the cast iron flange off the original Hercus mounted ASEA donk. Being anal, I milled off the base mounting from the replacement ASEA motor I have fitted to my mill to make it look the part. If you look at your motor you will see that is what ASEA did also when they offered the motor in flange mount guise.

500 big ones seems way over the top. I have since done two star to delta re-wirings myself and it would really hurt if I had to pay someone to do it. The first one I did was for my mill VFD conversion. I did a thread on it:

Converting 3 phase star to delta

Like I said, I have done two now and I have not found it to be anything highly technical in fact the first time I did it I really enjoyed doing it myself, the second time I was nearly complacent. It is certainly no more technical than a VFD conversion.

    Disclaimer: I'm not an electrician!

    Ben,

I have found Austin Electric in Lidcombe to be reasonable with their charges.
It's best if you go there and show it to them, and it may be easier if you take it along in pieces so they can see the innards.

    Cheers,

    Hi Ben,

I think I'm just echoing what everyone else has already said, but don't pay $500 for the star/delta wiring conversion... you could buy 2 brand new 1/2hp 3 phase motors for that sort of money...

Can you post a picture of the motor name plate, and a picture of the motor terminals. If it requires the star point to be brought out, then it's a trivial job for a motor rewinding company, my son-in-law is a motor rewinder and he tells me it's normally just a 15 minute job.

    Short form instructions...
Open the motor up, locate the star point, braze on three new wires ( he uses a hard silver solder** ), cover the wires with fibreglass spaghetti, lace up the wires around to the terminal block, spray with varnish. Re-assemble the motor, and check the phasing of the windings, label the first three U1, V1, W1, label the co-oresponding ones from the star point U2, V2, W2, Delta connection is U1--W2 U2--V1 V2--W1

The spaghetti, lacing and varnish should be available from a motor rewinder. Or you could try these ebay suppliers...

Vidaflex Fibreglass Sleeving Spaghetti Insulation 1M | eBay

    500yd Gudebrod MIL T 43435B Synthetic Braided Lacing Tape 18H SZ 3 Type I | eBay

Motor Insulating Varnish 100ml Coil Varnish | eBay

    Regards
    Ray

** hard solder is not really necessary, it just provides for a higher temperature before it all falls apart...

    Hi,

Thanks for all the replies and offers of help. I should of stated I'm not a electrician and anything that sparks scares me. I may have asked for a rewind, not a rewire. I think I'll try again tomorrow and ask for a rewire instead. I'll try the bloke at Lidcombe as well.

    Thanks Ben.

    Hi,

I took the motor out to Austin Electronics in Lidcombe. They're having a look but didn't sound too keen on doing anything to it. Sounded more interested in seller a newer 3ph instead. Should know in a couple of days.

Default Another electrical motor rewindre in Sydney to try

    Ben,

You can also try John Hill (Electrical Industries) Pty Ltd
    02 9773 7193 located at 3 Enterprise Ave Padstow 2211.

I have used them in the past for a few small jobs (single phase) but I have noticed they do a wide range of big electrical motors onsite. Another opinion cant go astray.

    Default Motor Re-winder in Sydney

I am in the electronics field and have done electricians tafe course but never the field work for ticket.

That said it looks like you need to trace S5 white wire back into the motor and it will branch into 3 and dissappear into the 3 windings at some point. Those 3 need to be separated and brought out to that junction box as in post above and connected as triangle (delta) rather than Y (star).

I used to use a mob called Atom in Silverwater (Auburn end). But was some time ago. They used to be agents for repair of Dremel among others. They rewound anything and everything.

    Regards
    James

I expect i may need to this shortly on one of mine.

    HI,

Thanks for all the replies and advice. I picked up my motor today from Austins at Lidcombe. Cost $70 bucks and all good to go (not that I'd really know). Will now be looking for a suitable VSD.

    Cheers Ben.
