Hi Dave,
I just assumed that since it broke it was most likely cast iron, I can't see that they would have used a cast steel cover, and if they had used cast steel, it probably wouldn't have broken? dunno... my bet is it's probably cast iron.
If it is cast steel, rather than cast iron, you are right, it would be worth having a go with the mig.

PS... it's not cast aluminium by any chance? Or is that what you were already thinking..

He said he thought it was cast alloy. I took it as cast aluminium. I agree with you about if it's cast iron.

It's cast iron, well it looks grey and grainy along the break.

Hi Frank,
Cast iron would be more likely on that sort of machine, you can try filing it and that will soon tell you if it aluminum or not.
Unfortunately that makes the repair a bit harder.
