Moving machines.
greetings chaps.Today was full of adventure. I had intended to move my Arno mill (shown in previous treads) from Geelong to Melbourne.I had made some scates which were intended to move a Sheridan lathe. There were to be 4 scates two at each end if the lathe. They had rubber tiers but I thought with 8 of them it would be OK. But the other day I went down to prepare the beast for moving and I decided to use two of the scates to shift the Arno mill. Oops The mill proved to be too heavy and the rubber tyers suffered a catostrofic disarster. So we moved the mill out of the workshop and prepared to lift it. But it was obvious that there was not going to be enough height to get the beast on the trailer. So after a lot of discussion the Arno went back into the shed. I had forgotten how easy is is to move machines on pipe. To make the day not a total loss there was a 14 inch stroke shaper and this was duly lifted on to the trailer and transported to Newport . The pics are of the shaper just being lifted. The scates are being removed when I remembered the camera. This is to show that the scated did work when not pushed beyond their cacacity. The previous owner had machined the drive pulleys to take polly vee belts. So I am looking forward to firing the beast up. Oh Boris and his son provided muscle and ideas during the day Yours 4-6-4

Hi,
Interesting looking machine. Does it have a name? I dont recall seeing a shaper that size with that sort of handle on the crossfeed, or the vertical feed being on the other side. Shame about the mill, better luck next weekend.

I guess shopping trolley wheels were not designed for moving machinery.
Was the mill damaged?

I would now be REALLY worried about the gantry! If your skate tyres failed, there is a pretty good chance that the gantry legs might fail too - they don't look confidence inspiring to me....

Moving Machinery
Greetings chaps, The Mill never got out of the workshop on the scates and it was moved by the pipe method. I think the wheels would have been OK if they had been used for the purpose of moving the Sheridan lathe. That means there would have been 8 wheels to take the weight. Its back to the drawing board for the wheels. There was no pain on moving the mill it was the height of the gantry that was the problem. I havd been told that the gantry itself had lifted large macines on previous occasions successfully. The shaper was made by the Gordon Institute in Geelong during the war. The previous owner had modified the drive and fitted a polly vee drive on the cone pulleys. I have yet to see how this works.. The Gantry is under review. It has to be portable so it cannot be monstrous. It was originally intended for motor exchanges of cars. I will keep you advised on changes. Thanks for the comments. 4-6-4

In my opinion that gantry is grossly undersized for lifting anything more than maybe 200kg and those castors (not skates) are rated at *maybe* 50kg each, AND you cannot just multiply by X number of castors to up the total load because you can't guarantee the load will always be evenly distributed.
Sorry but I think your lifting gear needs some serious beefing up.
