Multifix QCTP B series tool holders
Hi Gang,
If anyone hears of any B series tool holders around if you could drop me a line it would be much appreciated.
As an update on the Elliott lathe I have cleaned and changed all the lube. Fitted new thrust bearings in the apron for the feed clutches. Making up a new end support for the cross slide screw as a this stage I will leave the taper attachment off. Interestingly the motor has a centrifugal clutch on the drive this I believe is to help ease the start up current draw. Even So the 16 amp breakers will trip, these I will change to Merlin D type which are for motor supply.
I fixed the 2 stuck cam locks and all 6 are now smooth as silk. Thanks again Peter for your help and generous supply of the manual.
Cheers
Bruce

Franz Singer has a few B holders. Here's a couple - MULTIFIX Drehstahlhalter gebr. B25/120 für Drehmaschine | eBay
MULTIFIX B Schnellwechsel-Rückzughalter f. Drehmaschine | eBay
Franz's shipping costs are pretty stiff. You could buy a Chinese rip off.

Just for info, at least on the ones I have, the Chinese made copies of the Multifix tool holders are a direct replacement for the originals as confirmed on a friends original Multifix tool holder. Overall finish on the Chinese ones not quite to the original standard, but are very close and somewhat cheaper.

Bruce and Alan,
When you are using these 40 position tool posts, do you find the 9 degree indexing covers your tool positioning adequately?
For the indexing to work with repeatability, the post must be rigidly fixed to the compound thereby preventing subtle tweeking of the tool position. I don't rigidly fix my QCTP, prefering to be able to move it at will, but pay the price by loosing the ability to accurately reposition the tool.
I reckon a method of tool post to compound attachment that provided the option of both rigid and infinitely adjustable mounting would be a useful thing.
Bob.

Bob,
My TP is also not fixed and while the 9 deg covers most situations, being able to tweak it is handy, downside of course is initial set up to get it at right angles to C/L takes a bit longer. The original Colchester 4 way TP was indexed at the 4 positions, but could be adjusted in between if needed.

Hi Bob,
I haven't used this set up yet, the TP has 2 dowels locating it in position on the compound.

In what situations do you need something different than 0°, 45° and 90°?
I have a Multifix on my manual lathe and I never needed any different angle. Not even the 45°, I have a tool to make chamfers that goes in in the 90° position.
For inside boring, I use the 0°.
And if all fails, I rotate the compound. I never touched the Multifix turret-thingy, except after some ... umm ... "overload".

Wobbling about!
Good point Nick, it's just something I've always done.
Having the post fixed and rotating the compound makes sense. My tool holder has provision for an indexing pin which would require drilling a hole in the compound, something I'm not real keen on. I guess that simply bolting the post down tight would do the trick and also provide some "overload" protection. I recently bought some additional tool holders from a bloke in Rotterdam. There are a couple of W20 collet holders. Useless accessories unless perfectly aligned.
I will try rigid mounting.
