Museums / Trade Shows / Swap meets / Model Engineering displays ... ? Recommendations
I've been to some big museums in various places and never looked at Tools lathes etc.
However since buying the metal lathe have become very interested in history of tools.
Have been googling for worthwhile museums to put on an "If I'm in the area list"
Not had much luck so far, ............. so what are some Museums / trade displays & Expos for modern stuff / model engineering competitions / shipyards that you would recommend to others ?
I'll start ............
Cockatoo Island
Powerhouse Museum Sydney ?
Sovereign Hill I'd be going with different eyes this time
One of those big Model Engineer Modelmakers Exhibitions ..... anywhere ..... do we have them in Australia like they do in UK ?
Ballarat Swap Meet ?
I enjoyed seeing the huge brand new things at Hare & Forbes shop in Dandenong
Is there a big Museum in London full of Maudsley Whitworth Napier Nasmyth Holzapfiell etc things ?

The powerhouse is a must. The steam exhibit is exceptional and if you time it right, youll get to see a lot of stuff running. Things I found pretty amazing last time I was there were the Watt steam engine (third steam engine ever made) a partially diassembled steam turbine and joseph whitworth's tap set.

a couple more
G'day,
For steam and machinery rallies I'd start with The Old Machinery Magazine; http://tomm.com.au/event/
Lake Goldsmith, which I first attended last month, does have a heap of beaut old machine tools in the members sheds.
I believe Melbourne Steam Traction Engine club (at Scoresby, Vic) also has an impressive 'vintage workshop' shop shed as well; http://www.melbournesteam.com.au/index.html
For car shows, truck shows and swap meets, 'Restored Cars' and 'Australian Classic Car' magazines. CMC (NSW); http://www.councilofmotorclubs.org.au/
and AOMC for Victoria; http://www.aomc.asn.au/
Museums are trickier, I could go on for ages... so tomorrow when I'm awake.
see ya,
AndrewOC'Waratah' spring hammer by Hands & Scott c.1911- 20, 'Duffy, Todd & Williams' spring hammer c.1920, Premo lathe- 1953, Premo filing machine.

Cockatoo Island is an absolute *must* visit. One of my favourite places. If I were stupid enough to move back to Sydney to live, I'd be a volunteer down there just so I could play with the big toys. The Powerhouse Museum is OK but frankly it's not as good as it was 20 years ago.
Brisbane's maritime museum is good - there are a few machine tools in the dry dock control room area, quite interesting.

Bill,
Some worth going to from experience like the others above have stated.
Lake Goldsmith - Great displays of old steam engines, one of a kind. (My old man is a Club Member there)
Echuca Steam Rally - Usually on in April?? each year.
Bendigo Model Show - usually runs on a year on/off with the recently retired Monash show.
Agfest - Tasmania, massive show more for farming side of things but does have abit of everything.
Regards,
Kyle

This is a good show to check the big machines and new technology. Always fun to see the rather creative industrial robot demos.

Hi Bill
If there is enough interest I might be able to organise another tour of the National Measurement Institute.
