I need to put new belts on my little Myford both motor & headstock and I am hesitant to do so as you have to remove the spindle and the other shaft to do the headstock. It is not so much the disassembly that worries me as getting the thing realigned on assembly to run accurate again. I was thinking to get a linked belt to avoid this.

    Standard belt runs about $9, the A-section NU-T-LINK $100.76 per Mt + GST (23" is about $70)
The motor belt will be a standard type Z belt so no extra cost needed.

I'm thinking my pockets are not deep enough for the link belt. Has anyone changed the belts on theirs and any issues? How experienced are you at setting up machines? I believe the process takes about 2hrs to do.

I have had the lathe for many years and have never run it as it needs belts and drip feed oilers, so I am hoping there is no further issues with the machine.

I used to have one and replaced the belts on it. Very straight forward.
I made the new bronze bushes, new shaft out of SS, the size is 3/4" I think. Just remove a few grub screws (3 of them i think) and 2 caps on the spindle where the oilers are and that is it.

I replaced the belts on my Myford and it was a fairly simple operation.
I'm not a huge fan of the link type belts as I reckon they add vibration to the spindle and run very noisy.
I used Bosch automotive belts and the lathe runs nice and smooth and very quiet.
There's no need to remove the headstock just the bearing caps so realignment isn't a problem and you get to check out your bearings while you're at it.
I've got a copy of the original manual which I think outlines the process, if you like I can copy the relevant bits and send them through.
    Cheers,
    Greg.

That would be good Greg! Like I said I don't think it is complex to take apart it is making sure it is all tightly aligned on reassembly and not introducing any run out.

ML7 bed numbers started at 1001 in 1946, my lathe (K3348) was made in the early part of 1948 (3112-5105).

Did you make those on another lathe? Was the bronze bushes because the babbit bearings were worn? Why the new SS Sahft?

Saw this thread started and stayed out of as it was based for Victorian's now I see where its headed thought I'd say I have an ML7 from the No's its a mid early 70's but Sydney based.

The belts on mine where replaced prior me buying it still in good nick and was assured bearings were also the same and from what I have seen so far of my use all is good.

I'd like to my own bearings up should they ever require it maybe one of the more knowledgeable gents who has more experience might do a WiP.

Nope…I just need to get the confidence to get her running.

There are plenty of them on ebay, I think there is three currently in Vic alone.
