    Default Odd steel sizes

I rang around after some 25mm bright steel today and found bright is only available in 25.4mm (1"). Southern quoted $26 pm whilst Greens quoted $15 pm, both said they had stock. Rocked up at Greens and guess what - no stock. I ended up picking up 2.2m of black in 30mm and 2.4m of bright in 19mm. The bloke I spoke to said black was only available in metric: 20, 24, 27, 30mm, etc, and bright in imperial sizes: 19mm (3/4"), 25.4 (1"), etc. How odd??????

And along the same lines, if you go to Brighton Steel Supplies for BMS rounds the 1020 grade stuff is in imperial dimensions and the 1214 grade stock is in metric dimensions.

All the bright i get is imp too, only the place i normally go sells it in its metric form. The bar i used for the douglas ratchet had 44.45 written on the end...
I've seen black bar sold as both, depends on where you get it from.
The 4140 i have coming from interlloy is metric.

    Default Confused???

I still have a little black bar in imperial and a little bright in metric I bought in QLD a couple of years ago. I think some of these steel suppliers have decided what we want, regardless of what we actually do want. New car dealers seem to work on the same principle, most seem to have decided we all need automatic transmissions, manuals are very difficult to source these days. I'll try Greens in a month or so for the 25.4mm bright, it's only for stock, but thanks for the offer.

Brighton Steel Supplies have plenty of BMS round stock all the time. When I spoke to Malcolm from Greens the other day he said that they generally only get BMS in when customers ask for it, they don't keep stock on spec.

I buy 20mm bright quite regularly, it is definitely available in metric.

Try Steel Solutions Melbourne, maybe they will ship it to you. I haven't actually asked for 25mm though.
