    Default Oh crap.........

Last night I was using my lathe when it tripped the circuit breaker.
On the same line but different power points I had a CD player and a light above my lathe.
Switched every thing of and individually tried each, the CD player and a light no problem.
Tried the lathe and it blew both the shed and the house circuit breakers.

    What do I do next?

When you plug the lathe in and turn the power point on? or when you try and turn the motor on?

Get an electrician - looks like you have an electrical fault in the lathe electrics

That is what I was hoping to avoid.

Check to make sure swarf hasn't got anywhere it shouldn't have, like in the motor.
Mine has a micro switch just under the bottom right of the head stock which is the forward reverse switch check to make sure nothing is touching it as well.

    Hey wm460,

Lucky it isn't the CD player, my shed doesn't operate unless there is some 'other noises going on'. If you are blowing the house breaker it sounds serious, I would be getting a Sparky, you don't want the fridge off for too long.

    Hi HazzaB,

If it's tripping the main house breaker, then it's probably a direct short somewhere between active and ground. As it could be almost anywhere, in the switch gear, motor contactor, motor itself, motor capacitor shorted.. where ever it is, you should see some signs of arcing over, burn marks or similar. If you aren't familiar with this stuff, get a sparky to take a look.

As Dave said... Have a look around, perhaps inside the lathe switchbox and see if any swarf has gotten in. (unplug the mains first).

    Regards
    Ray

Just had the same thing happen to my milling machine ,looks like I'm up for a re-wind ,not sure yet still waiting on an expert diagnosis .
    But my feeling is ,re-wind.
My problem was cracked insulation on a couple of wires , the wire was shorting on the frame of the motor.

Mark, sorry just caught up with your latest troubles First your dusty, now this.
I suggest a phone call to Asset Machinery would be in order, you do have the 920V don't you.

Perhaps , if you haven't already done so, read this this thread from xr6t.

I managed to buy a secondhand Carbatec 2hp dusty in Adelaide, so once I bring that back here my dusty problems will be fixed as well.

Bottom right of the head stock, is that front or back of the head stock?

Thanks for the thought, The beer fridge is on another circuit, so is safe.

Sparkies up here charge near enough to $100 P/H

This is what happened to my Dusty, with that it was all most as cheap to buy a new one and a lot less stuffing around.

The third black box on the right looks a bit dickie to me.

Grey box is the speed display and direcitly below is a black thing on the left is the forward/ reverse switch.
The wire on the right is the fuse.
