    Default Oilstones

    Hi

There are many types of oil stones out there . What are ther most suitable for honing HSS edges ? Indian or Arkansas seem to be popular . And, what is the preferred oil ? Is Kero OK ?

I'm sure there will be lots of opinions on this. I don't think the brand or type really matters as long as its a reasonable quality and not too soft. I just use a small, ( its about 60mm L x about 20 W x about 6mm thick) fine grit stone. Can't even remember the brand or if its a natural or man made stone.
I use oil on mine but kero would be ok too. I think the best thing is to not mix your lubricants. ie if you decide to use kero on that stone keep it for kero only. Have another stone (if you need one) for oil. I keep another larger stone for sharpening the kitchen knives that I only use water on.

For touching up tool edges, I now use a diamond lap. It doesn't change shape with use, or shed abrasive particles.

I have one of those too. I stripped most of the grit off pretty quickly on 11% cobalt. I went back to my stone like Bollie described, it works fine. I just use a touch of way oil on it cause its always close at hand.
