    Default another outdoor piece

    Hi guys,

after talking about getting set up for TIG'ing at home for months I finally rented a bottle of argon and got the torch and accessories sorted. had a few problems getting used to my tig setup at the beginning and went through a fair bit of scrap tinkering with things till the welds were looking better, with help from the welding section of this forum (thanks guys).

it's been a fair while since i've held a tig torch so getting back on the bike was a bit of a challenge and i've still got a ways to go.

working for an hour or so after work each day this week, and most of this morning (saturday) I've completed my first TIG project, which is a smaller outdoor side/drinks table or sitting bench to match the previous one i stick welded.

i made this one out of 1.6mm tubing instead of 3mm, which my wallet is grateful for but i also think it is more aesthetically pleasing with the smaller radius on the corners of the tubing. i got a bit impatient dressing the leg welds and there are a few minor flaws that are visible close up, but having said that with the TIG this table came out much better than the last, and is flat/square in all dimensions to within 1mm tolerance.

next up is a high bar/serving table to go next to the BBQ. I'm glad i can use the 1.6mm tube or else these projects would end up costing me lots more, all up the side table cost about 50 bucks to make

    Hi Corgan,

Congratulations, great job, and should last many years of outdoor relaxing around the barbie.

I like the compound mitred corners very tricky, but when I look at the earlier pictures I see a butt joint for the legs? So I'm intrigued, how did you do the corners?

    Regards
    Ray

PS... I just re-read Stuart's post, and I guessing you masked it off like he suggested and then polished it to create that line, that looks like a compound mitre?
    Nice trick...

yes- stu is correct, i basically cut up a can of bundy and coke, made little squares with a straight edge and clamped them over the corners before running a 180 grit surface conditioning wheel over it to create the effect. looks like it's done it's job!

    cheers fellas

    Hi Corgan,

Bundy & Coke, .... that's the Queensland solution, I would have opted for a Victorian solution, and cut up a VB can...

Nice trick and came out brilliantly! I can just see it now, asking the unsuspecting visitors to check out the welding on the mitred joints...

    Regards
    Ray
