Peening a Sliding Handle
Hi All,
A bit of advice needed. I'm making a replacement handle for a Waldon vice I recently purchased.
I remember when I was at trade school we made sliding handles for one of our projects. I'm sure we peened one end but for the life of me I can't remember how we did it. I asked some of the blokes at work and we all have different memories.
I do remember this:
Make the receiving shaft and the handle end a tight fit.
Leave a couple of mil to peen over.
One bloke suggested counter sinking (or making a concave depression in) the shaft. Another suggestion was to drill it instead.
Then peen over the excess, file, sand etc to your happy with the result.
Cheers Ben.
ps, I do remember to make sure the handle is on the vice before peening.

Ben,
Make a chamfer in the handle end internal hole and then peen the handle shaft over to retain the handle end.

Hi,
Finally attempted to peen a handle. Thought I'd do a test run first. I used black bar. The shaft was 10 mm the mating shaft was 9.6mm ish (I was able to twist the cap on by hand), the cap was 12 mm and the drilled hole was 9.5 mm. I didn't measure the material to be peened but it was about 1-1.5 mm with a chamfer.
I peened it over then filed using different cuts.
If any one knows the proper dimensions for peening a vice handle, let me know. Especially the bore/drill hole size and the chamfer/peening material. The dimensions with be very similar - 10 mm shaft, approx 12-13mm cap and I may use bright bar if I can find any.
Cheers Ben.
