    Default Pipe bender

    Hi Metal workers,
I'm looking for someone in Adelaide preferably South or West of the CBD, but not necessarily so, who has a pipe bender capable of bending 16mm deformed bar. (reinforcing rod) I have 20 pieces each about 1.5m long that need to have one ninety degree bend in each (total of 20 bends) The radius is not critical but should be in the range of 60mm to 90mm. I have contacted an engineering Co. but the price was formidable. I can understand that to pay an employee to set the bender up, do the bends plus all of the overheads makes it not cheap. Happy to deliver the steel & pick up & pay cash for someone who wants to earn some pocket money. Also could build a hand operated bender to do the job, but a lot of work for 20 bends. Thought that I would try this option before building a bender.
    Regards,
    Tinkera. (Ian S.)

    Hi Ian,
    could you try this.
On a piece of plate, weld a small bit of 2" pipe with a piece of 25mm flat on edge about 16mm away, lay the rod into it and place a piece of pipe over the rod to use as a handle to bend it around the 2" pipe as a former.
Bad explanation I know so I thought I would include a bad drawing as well.

The trouble with jobs like this is the time involved.

Unless it's an air/hydraulic bender (which does the bend in seconds), using a hand pump bender will take ages.

Those jack type units are slooooooowwwwwwwwww....................................................

    So that's the issue.

    Hi Phil,
Thanks for the prompt reply, the description was fine, no sketch needed. I would be a bit concerned that the bend on the handle side of the former would belly out a bit, not trying to be picky, but they need to look neat & professional. I had thought of bolting an old automotive water pump to some RHS with an idler pulley behind it & a hook fixed to a pivoting handle to pull the bar around. The pulley that I have is only pressed metal (pretty solid) but a lot of force required to pull 16mm bar around. Next option to build a frame with a couple of rollers to fit in my bearing press & use it like a brake press. The reason I posted was that I think there will be people around who have an hydraulic pipe bender & even if it has rollers for 50 mm pipe they should be hard enough that the deformed bar wouldn't hurt them.
    Have a great day,
    Ian.

Hi Ian, I have a hydraulic pipe bender that will bend from 1/2" to 2 1/2 " that you could use at my place. How many pieces need to be bent ? I'm home all day every day so give me a call on 0419002468 if this will help you; and of course there is no charge for using the bender just goodwill.
