What to do with this piston?
Gents,
A friend gave me this piston out of a ship's engine. He has sandblasted it clean so it has a nice satin finish. Bore is 125mm.
I'd like to put it to use in the workshop somehow. I could take up smoking and use it as an ashtray, but that would be too easy. I thought about drilling a bunch of holes in the crown to hold small items like scribers, pencils, etc. Anyone got a more imaginative idea?

Mount it
Mount it on a nice polished wooden stand and tell the wife you bought it for her to put on the mantelpiece.

Nah, we haven't got a mantlepiece.
How about one of these in the gudgeon pin hole? Should be a perfect fit:

Pistons are one of those things that are beautifully made, look good, inspire wonder, and are totally useless for any other purpose.
I can't tell you how many times I've looked at old pistons and though these must be good for something.
Nope. That's why someone gave it to you - they probably got sick of thinking what to do with it.
Maybe turn it upside down and put your pencils and biros in it.

Ill be interested to see some good ideas on this, Ive got one as well. Its a little bigger in the bore and Ive got the conrod too. Whatever I end up doing with it, itd best to do it just once, its a bloody heavy unit!

The big piston affliction is only slightly worse than the big nut problem.
You go into an office in a workshop and the guys got this humungous nut on his desk, shelf, cupboard, window sill - and it's always painted RED for some reason.
Too heavy for a paper weight, too small for a door stop - totally useless again.
So you say " my that's a mighty big nut you've got there".
This is always followed by "you should have seen what it came off of ".
yep.
Seen this all before.
If its big and free a blokes just got to have one.

I like Jack620 idea of putting a clock in the gudgeon pin hole, if you could find a nice piece of timber, polished and mount the piston on it.
Should look pretty good.

The gudgeon pin hole is 50mm, which is a reasonable sized clock. Here's an example.

Bad luck its only small, the larger ones make a good outdoor coffee table and seats.

Get
Get someone to jewel it for you!
It will still be totally useless, but it will look too good to throw out!
Men, like Bower birds, love & collect shiny things!.
If you could drill it with enough holes.... and fit it into a matching sized 125mm PVC Pipe - with matching holes- maybe you could make a compressed air blast gate out of it or something?
Fill it with lead and use it as a counter weight on a sash chord over a pulley as a door self closer?
CNC carve something around the outside of the skirt and fit LED's inside it and make it into a lamp.

Cut it in half from top to bottom and make book ends out of it. You can put still put little clocks in the holes too, set for two time zones, or standard and daylight savings time if you Aussies do the clock changing thing.
