Being able to disconnect it so you can set zero should make you life much easier

There is a typo in your figures somewhere(or I'm missing something again) 3"-0.007 isn't 115mm(or did you not zero and were just checking reputability?).

    Hi Stuart,
No, I left the slot as shown in the picture. The measuring head can be moved a 1/4" up or down when the thumbscrew is loosened. The thumb screw just nips the locking screw on the measuring head. I'd better go do that exercise again ! The point that I was trying to make was that I hadn't expected to be able to see or measure the expansion of the alloy rod just from the heat of my fingers. The alloy rod is definitely supposed to be 3" long.

    I'll go and re-measure it...

    Lightbulb Hight Gauge

    Hi Stuart,

Don't know what I've done with that bit of alloy rod ! I found another piece of rod and measured that. I measured it with my M&W mechanical callipers and then with my 3" M&W micrometer, last but not least I used the digital hight gauge. The photos show the three measurements. The mechanical callipers read 2.670" the micrometer gave me 2.6745" and the hight gauge gave me 67.85 mm. Assuming 1mm is 39.37 thou that should work out at 2.671".

I took great care not to make the same error as last time. It does help if I zero the hight gauge before taking a reading. I'm happy that the accuracy is within acceptable limits. That is about as good as I can manage. )

One thing that I'm surprised about is that nobody has commented on the bodged up scriber come jaws. Mmm.

Hey I liked it. Sure I wouldnt trust it to be nearest 0.0001"........... but thats not often a problem for me.

Rough edges ! No no that is a pattern to make the base look different.

Actually I was going to paint the base, but it was suggested that it would cause the base to sit off square. But I have an idea. I'll do it and photograph it, then see what you think.
