    Default Pointer Puller designs

    Hi Guys,
Just wondering if there are any old Instrument Fitters on this board and if they have a favorite Pointer Puller design they may want to share?
For the uninitiated, a PP is used to remove the pointers of pressure gauges when calibrating them. Not much use to anyone else though.
I have Googled and found a couple and have squirreled them away for future reference.
The one I have at the moment is a little worn, so I thought I may as well have a go at making a new one, partly as an excuse to use the new lathe and mill.
I'll post some pics of the finished device, if anyone is interested.

You can find some basic ones in the model railway suppliers catalogs - Walther's & Micromark (US) have them for removing the wheels on very small modle locos. Basically a 'C' with a fine screw threaded pusher/puller.

I can't even remember what we used, I must be getting old! I used to build instruments for Kents many years ago.

I finished ( near enough) my pointer puller yesterday. Just have to machine a slot in the bottom to suit the gauges. Was great having all the gear to do the job in one hit, I can tell you!
It's all stainless so I am not sure how the pin is going to hold up. May try and harden and temper just the pin at work.

    Default Pointer puller

    I understand now Sterob
Nice job, all bright and shiny. Is it 400 series or better ?
Now that there a piccy, all is explained.

I had a tool similair to that to push the front sight across on my muzzleloader.

It was open throated and engaged the flats of the barrel with the screw pin pushing the sight in its dovetail.
My watchmaker mate who is a master machinist, makes tools like that to pull clock hands off.

I am unable to show a pic as the tool lying in the grass somewhere at a range near Bundaberg Qld.

I must get in a make one again at school before the cherubs totally destroy the miller.

Thanks Grahame, Do you mean the grade of steel? I don't know. I assume it is 316, but don't know how to determine if it is or isn't.
All I know is that it shouldn't rust.....
