I wonder how many this makes.

Martin don't leave, just sleep on it, and then reconsider. One of the things I teach at work is the art of communication. We all speak it and write it, but sadly it does not always come across the actual way someone is thinking in their head. Believe me I have copped my fair share of being boxed around the ears by some that I thought were being self opinionated, but that's what human beings are like. Don't cut yourself off from some of the most helpful and knowledgeable people around, just sit back and read and ignore the blunt comments.
    Rgds,

While perhaps at odds with your view, I do think this is a good forum.
A lot of blokes show up here, don't contribute much and then complain that they feel excluded. (And contribute is different from the number of posts racked up too)
How many have taken the time to show others what they do in their workshops or talk about what they have so that others can see they are genuinely interested in machines and metal work? Respect is earnt not demanded.
Another thing not realised by newer members is that a lot of the more established members here have met in the flesh, which always helps - so things seen as blunt comments may actually be continuations of private conversations and taken the way (by the recipient) as intended.
If comments made do inadvertently offend (and no one is perfect) then grabbing your bucket and going home without making an effort to straighten things out won't fix things. The moderators can help (and do step in) if they are told of issues. Members do occasionally too.

    Here's my 2c worth...

I am an absolute beginner to this metal turning hobby and as such have very little clue about it. As such it's not very often I feel suitably qualified to post any response. What I do know however is that there are a lot of people who know a lot about the subject and hence I am very grateful for all the info they shed into the community - not only answering my questions but the info I receive by reason others questions.

In contrast, there are two other hobbies of mine where I do know a lot and often respond to questions in other forums. I too have had the occasional response that has made me ask "why bother?", but at the end of the day we get that in all walks of life and we continue to learn from others by contributing.

Stay or go, it's your call but I suspect you'd ultimately be doing yourself a disservice if you go.

Martin...why did you post rather than just leave and not tell us why?...you want a reaction?

its what we do all the time ...talking (typing in the case of forums) gets reactions, some of it you heed, some you disagree with and challenge, and then there's other where you should just bite you tongue;...its not in most cases meant to offend, but rather to give the others experiences, thoughts etc etc..albeit very strongly..

Can I ask a question....are you are trolling..if not why not laugh it off

There's a lot of good information here and quite a few who are extremely good at what they do; unfortunately there are also a few who tend to pontificate, criticise and opinionate with a little too much robustness and gusto, particularly on anything associated with C#!n^.
Not everyone has the time or inclination to participate to the level of some here, but I don't see anything wrong with 252 posts in four years or so; for that matter, I see nothing wrong with 2 posts in 10 years. What I do see wrong here however, is asking someone if they are a troll or asking someone why they didn't just leave quietly with their tail between their legs.

Do unto others Martin - put the pontificators, criticisers and opinionated in their place - they won't hesitate to do unto you - on any forum.

The so called friendliness that supposedly exists on this forum, I would take that to task: there are a core of individuals who are obviously very good friends on this forum and they tend to unite, dictate and rule with much opinionated gusto. There are also better, friendlier forums than this one and yet others that are worse. This one sits in the middle somewhere. What this forum excels in, is the number of prolific posters and ease of use, that is what makes this forum interesting.

Oh, did I mention how your sense of humour will improve, listening to the pontificators, criticisers and opinionated. Just don't forget to add a smiley face to any jocular add ons (or not), some here require that sort of notice.

Forums are strange places, you get all types... sometimes you just have to make allowances... my apologies to those who've seen this before,

How many online forum members does it take to change a light bulb?

1 to change the light bulb and to post that the light bulb has been changed.
14 to share similar experiences of changing light bulbs and how the light bulb could have been changed differently.
7 to caution about the dangers of changing light bulbs.
27 to point out spelling/grammar errors in posts about changing light bulbs.
53 to flame the spell checkers.
    41 to correct spelling/grammar flames.
6 to argue over whether it's "lightbulb" or "light bulb"...another 6 to condemn those 6 as anal-retentive
2 industry professionals to inform the group that the proper term is "lamp".
15 know-it-alls who claim *they* were in the industry, and that "light bulb" is perfectly correct.
156 to email the participant's ISPs complaining that they are in violation of their "acceptable use policy".
109 to post that this group is not about light bulbs and to please take this discussion to a lightbulb group
203 to demand that cross posting to hardware forum, off-topic forum, and lightbulb group about changing light bulbs be stopped.
111 to defend the posting to this group saying that we all use light bulbs and therefore the posts *are* relevant to this group.
306 to debate which method of changing light bulbs is superior, where to buy the best light bulbs, what brand of light bulbs work best for this technique, and what brands are faulty.
27 to post URL's where one can see examples of different light bulbs.
14 to post that the URL's were posted incorrectly and then post the corrected URL's.
3 to post about links they found from the URL's that are relevant to this group which makes light bulbs relevant to this group.
33 to link all posts to date, quote them in their entirety including all headers and signatures, and add "Me too".
12 to post to the group that they will no longer post because they cannot handle the light bulb controversy.
19 to quote the "Me too's" to say "Me three".
4 to suggest that posters request the light bulb FAQ.
44 to ask what is a "FAQ".
4 to say "didn't we go through this already a short time ago?"
143 to say "do a Google search on light bulbs before posting questions about light bulbs".
1 forum lurker to respond to the original post 6 months from now and start it all over again....

If you swapped over to LED's then it shouldn't need replacing. Hope it'd not made in China...

My cousin's great great great grandfather's nephew's roommate's friend lost his job in the Australian LED manufacturing plant because of people like you Ray, buying overseas made goods rather then the au made goods..

From my readings on this particular part of the Woodwork forum most but not all people upset, annoyed disgruntled etc all say that they are going to leave.

Still not sure what fishing has to do with anything.
