Thread: power feed on mill/drill

Change out of a hundred bucks. It looks good. I have spent all my money at this stage. SWMBO would say cant you turn it by hand for a while before spending more money lol? I will remember these if some extra comes my way tho.

I need to try and have a looksee at one of these brake adjusters thingy's that I keep hearing about. Not too many trucks worked on close by. I don't think I know of anybody in the right position to help me at the moment. Got to think about that one.

OK I have found a suitable 24V motor , I think its out of a truck or bus cabin fan heater system

My plan is to machine up some suitable belt driven pullies , in order to reduce the table feed speed down to around between 0 to 200rpm .

Does anyone know of a source of small belts , e.g., around 10" - 12 " long and with about a 6 to 10 mm wide profile in either V or round section ? I looked at record player turntable belts but they look to be fragile .

I've bought some off Aussie ebay.....toothed belts and a selection of different sized pulleys to suit. Prices were reasonable. Belts were ~10mm wide and different lengths as well.

Check out Redthane belting, which is polyurethane hollow round section transmission belting. You cut it to length and join by heat fusion or with a little barbed stud that fits into the core hole. Sizes from 4.8mm diameter upwards.

I just woke up, my local industrial supplier sells V belts in M section - these are available down to 9.5" length , so that is the answer

Have you got a 24v power supply for this motor yet? I did some research and came up with some info on connecting 2 computer power supplies together in series to produce 24v. It was very interesting and would work out cheap.

Last year , I bought a 24V battery charger at a local clearing sale $15.... its Aust. made too . Looks to be in new condition .

I found a neat cct for a regulated power supply with the pass transistors being the common variety TO3 case - on ebay I bought all of the components cheap, the specific transistors were like $5 for a packet of 20 ! I wouldnt buy any IC's or transistors locally again after seeing the prices on ebay .


I think those PWM controllers are not that fussy about the supply voltage .

No worries. Finding a reasonably priced supply was one of the problems with 24v and I just thought I would mention this. I have just ordered 2 power supplies, the same type as used in the threads I read. 2 x 500w Dell 2650 for $46 delivered.

If anyone is interested I can dig up the addresses for the conversion instructions. Its pretty easy.

I received the two power supply's this week. They are out of Dell Servers so are serious bits of equipment. Quite heavy. Long and narrow. Rated at 41 Amps for 12 volts so should handle the gear motor. Now I need to order the motor and controller. A bit more reading on the conversion on RC forums in Oz and US and now I have it worked out.

Also a quick note to say that I have ordered the geared motor and controller. I have been watching the motor and it showed up as "7 available". I don't know how accurate these figures are but I thought I should buy one before they were all gone. By the time they arrive I will be working Vintage and have no spare time for hobbies.
