    Default power surface grinder

Have recently acquired a power surface grinder the same as

    http://www.graysonline.com/lot/0050-...2-type-b-asset

    Unfortunately there is no manual.

Anyone have the same grinder or ?have a manual.

Hydraulic traverse and cross feed which is great but I need to fill the hydraulic container in the base. Any thoughts on grade of hydraulic oil?

    Thanks in advance

    G'day Mark.

I have his little brother, you have seen it. I dont have a manual either. I'm pretty sure I would have put VG 32 or 46. Primary hyd functions are the table and the cross feed. It also lubes the slides. 68 would do, but it might be a bit sluggish on a cold morning. I'd put anything in it, if its decribed as a hydraulic oil, in the viscosity range 32 - 68.

    Regards Phil

Well done! is it the one from the auction that finished a few days ago?

I have been watching Grays, recently they seem to have a glut of SG but most are quite large and all seem to be in either SA or Sydney. There is a nice one on auction ATM.

    Hi Simon,
This surface grinder came via a friend whose uncle owned a tool and die shop in Sydney. He retired and left his workshop to my friend as he had no children (lucky buggar). Now he is a builder and had no idea what to do with the machines so asked me. Main machines were the power surface grinder, Chipmaster lathe, Nuttal lathe, Pal mill and arbroga radial arm drill. So for a reasonable payment I took the grinder and drill. I also picked the machinery up in Sydney and dropped the lathes and mill at his place and brought home the other two.
I already had a Churchill OSB surface grinder which needs some restoration so it has been moved to storage in another shed and the power has been brought into the workshop. Looks in good condition with a 300 x 600 mag chuck. Did damage one copper hydraulic line when I lifted it into the shed ( it weighes around 3tonne) so this will need repairing.
Look forward to getting it going soon.

    Thanks Phil,
I have plenty of ISO 46 on the farm so I'll give that a try.

    Hi Mark,
The Blohm uses ISO32 for the hydraulics. As Phil says though i don't thing it would matter if it was a bit thicker, although the pump may be a little noisier?

    Hi Mark,

Did you end up locating a manual for your machine? I recently acquired an S6 myself without a manual.

If you or anybody else has a copy it would be appreciated.

I'm also interested to know what size wheel they take, particularly the ID?

    Thanks
    Spiro

It should be 1 1/4" I.D. That's a really common size for tool room grinding wheels. Modern catalogs will list them as 31.75 mm

    Thanks for your reply Phil.

I also purchased a TOS surface grinder at the same time (package deal) and it takes a 10" (250mm) wheel and has a 3" (76mm) bore.

The wheel on the repco-power surface grinder currently is around 16" diameter (used) so I suspected it may be a larger ID but it is quite heavy, so you're probably right. I'm new to this and not too confident to take it all apart to measure it just yet as it seems like its been balanced and I don't have a balancing fixture for it.

    Regards,
    Spiro

My J&S 1400X runs ISO32 in the form of Mobil Vacuoline 1405. I was able to purchase some locally (surprisingly).

J&S is also 1 1/4" ID. Good to hear it is the common size for them. Should make getting grindng wheels easier.

Phil do you know of any local wheel suppliers?

Wow 16".. That is a biggun....

I think the bores in the 14" wheels on my cylindrical grinder are 5"..

I was thinking your machine was the same as mine. Yours is much larger if it has a 16" wheel on it now. Its probably a 5" bore.

If you dont want to lose the balance, put a chalk mark on the wheel, and just put it back on the same place. It does look like it's been balanced, with those two weights arranged like that.

    Regards Phil.
