Travelling stick tool holder
Hi all,
the travelling stick has provided plans for a tool holder for my little Douglas shaper so I just had to make one.
Ignore the finish as I had to see if it worked first. I cut the basic shape out with the bandsaw in the vertical position and rough filed it. It was then set up in the shaper and the groove for the tool cut. I have deviated from the drawing to create a larger distance between the hole and the back of the tool as I didn't think there was enough to stop it bending. It has worked well with a deeper than normal cut than I would normally make and no stalling or chatter but plenty of flex in the tool head. This means I had to take a spring cut. No biggy.
All in all I am very happy with the way it turned out..
I also took a video of it in action but as at the time of posting it wasn't available on you tube

Nice one Phil
I have not spent enough time looking at the sticks contents so i hadn't seen that holder. Looks like a winner.1915 17"x50" LeBlond heavy duty Lathe, 24" Queen city shaper, 1970's G Vernier FV.3.TO Universal Mill, 1958 Blohm HFS 6 surface grinder, 1942 Rivett 715 Lathe, 14"x40" Antrac Lathe, Startrite H225 Bandsaw, 1949 Hercus Camelback Drill press, 1947 Holbrook C10 Lathe.

Travelling stick tool holder
Thanks Ewan.
It worked real well, you could even see the head flex and spring back. I was taking cuts that would have stalled her with a normal tool holder.

Hi Phil,
Nice and simple, looks much easier to make than a gooseneck, where does the cutter end up in relation to the clapper?
Looking forward to seeing the video too..
Regards

I think the plans for the holder were added after i had the stick, what was the file called Phil? It looks like a nice little (well maybe not so little for my machine) project and putting some "give" in my machine could be a good thing....

Travelling stick tool holder
Haven't forgotten you Ewan. It seems its not on the stick. It may have come on a CD I received from someone who's address was on the postpack that got thrown out way too early. I am organizing the stick into folders ready to re-send.
Does anyone remember sending me a CD about shapers.

Hi Phil,
I do need to get around to making me something like that, but it keeps getting bumped down the list. I'm currently using a lathe tool holder with built in rake! lol
I'm not so sure about that(though I'm not saying the tool holder doesnt work). Assuming the everything from the clapper box pin to the necked down area of the tool holder is rigid(within reason). Wont most of the flex come from the necked area and there-fore the tool will pivot around that point? Am I missing something?

Thanks Phil, I really like the design, it is much more simple and elegant than the holder i put on the sick (the angle index-able type)
