My anvil always being in the way and after tripping over the bloody thing for years for years, I finally weakened.

A stand for it was made .

I thought I had taken a profile pic of anvil and stand but its only the anvil .< edit -anvil stand added>

No point in having an anvil without tongs - The forge is yet to be constructed so no forging my own tongs as yet. I will make a few more of them now.

The ones shown are the poverty model made from left over materials.

The little bandsaw has really earned its keep after being tuned up. It made the cutting of the compound angles dead easy.

A decent blade made the bandsaw easy to square and align.

Thanks for your pic of the Dawn logos.

The logo second one in from the right is the one. Looks like the word Dawn superimposed over a gear.

Does anyone have a nice clean shot of this logo and perhaps one key dimension for scaling?

Looks good, how did you dress the top of the anvil?

Mine sit's outside, and still needs a proper cover.

Initially, I used a woodworking portable belt sander. Grinder and flap wheels for the horn.I am sorry I did not shape that better.A project for another dya perhaps.

Last time was with a worn out flap wheel. Worn flap wheels are much better as a new one can leave deep marks..You have to keep them flat and keep moving to stop them biting in.


Lately I have taken to wiping it over with a beeswax and linseed oil mix.

"No point in having an anvil without tongs", so you fabricated them - not exactly true path blacksmithing, but a nice job!

The blacksmithing forums tell you to make the first pair of tongs without tongs, but as you say you need a forge for that. I made four pair by exchanging folding plastic stuff for them at the Rocky Swap. There must be over a hundred pair at the Heritage Village, all hand crafted. A lot of special ones for particular jobs (blacksmiths probably made the first SSTs), and only a few for the little bit of flat and round that I beat.

If there,s something like that here in Mackay I haven't ,but I would gladly make the trip down when the Rocky. The only access I get to buying older tools is when the old fella from Bundy in a Mercedes van and trailer bobs up at the Sarina markets in the winter months. Really worthwhile scores are few and far between.

Is the Rocky swap at the Heritage Village.? From what you have written .It does sound like I recently missed it.

Sorry for the confusion - the Rocky Swap is on at the Showgrounds on the first Sat in August, so the next one is just under 12 months away.

There are 5 Market Days a year out at the Village, but I have never seen a stall with this kind of gear. Just the usual homemade excreta of arts and crafts and a few other things. I am a bit over going to markets to spend time or money, but I go and fire up the forge for few little demos or drive one of the vintage vehicles.

My latest project out there is flattening a pile of dirt with a Bobcat, but that is not metalwork!

The equipment is a means to and end at the moment. Knife forging is the goal. I enjoy fabricating my own tools,so fabrication it is.

The materials may come as bolts or railway track spikes,automotive coil springs, torsion bars and leaf springs.

At the moment I am working towards getting set up to forge cheaply acquired knife making steel in general. The tong shape will be geared for flat initially though I expect to make some later to hold round and square shapes of suitable knife making materials. That,s what I understand at the moment, but with hands on I expect that my opinions may change.

From what I read, I understand that BBQ charcoal is not suitable for forging. Where do CQ blacksmiths obtain their supplies? What is a reasonable price for second hand tongs.
