Eneloop make AA and AAA batteries (rechargeable) that have a storage life of approx 1 year. I use them in all of my digital cameras etc and have found them to be excellent.

They don't fit digital calipers though.
They are great in cameras though.Several makers have them now

Even a low battery that still works can cause the caliper display to not function properly.
A mate gave me a new cheap Chinese caliper for nothing. He said it was a bit faulty and would not zero properly . I tried it for a while and was going to throw it in the bin when I decided to try a new battery. Presto ! it is working fine now. I use it for rough measuring steel bar and such .

I have the Aldi $19.99 Electronic Digital Caliper purchased 25/5/2006. (Docket is still in the box).
From memory I have only used 2 or 3 batteries but it is only used 2 - 3 times per week.
The techinical Specification sheet that came with it says "Power: One silver oxide battery 1.55V, type SR44, capacity 180mAh.
I actually did a search this morning and came up with this site:
    http://www.sr44.com/
I think the batteries are available from Jaycar for about $2 each.
