Even a low battery that still works can cause the caliper display to not function properly.
A mate gave me a new cheap Chinese caliper for nothing. He said it was a bit faulty and would not zero properly . I tried it for a while and was going to throw it in the bin when I decided to try a new battery. Presto ! it is working fine now. I use it for rough measuring steel bar and such .
I have the Aldi $19.99 Electronic Digital Caliper purchased 25/5/2006. (Docket is still in the box).
From memory I have only used 2 or 3 batteries but it is only used 2 - 3 times per week.
The techinical Specification sheet that came with it says "Power: One silver oxide battery 1.55V, type SR44, capacity 180mAh.
I actually did a search this morning and came up with this site:
http://www.sr44.com/
I think the batteries are available from Jaycar for about $2 each.
