Fixed my Parting Tool with my Mill
So my Emco Compact 8 lathe came with everything except a parting tool. Which I thought odd but got used to not having it but for my current project it was going to be very handy.
So I bought the smallest one that would fit in my tool holder but still use a standard parting tool HSS. Found it didn't fit so had it milled by someone else. Didn't have the mill at the time.
Anyway it didn't work Part of the reason (no pun intended) was that when the tool was in the tool holder it did not sit vertical so I gave up on it.
Anyway this weekend after doing the service on the wife's car I had a few spare hours so decided to have a very close look at the parting tool determined to fix it!
After close inspection it turns out the sections that hold it in the tool holder were not square to the part that holds the parting blade.
Solution was to square up the faces with my mill. Gotta love having a mill
Results below:
I used a 12mm end mill and took off about 0.2mm from each face. Re sharpened the parting tool HSS set up the height and off I went machining.
Machining some 22 mm diameter aluminium and it was like a hot knife through butter! Got a bit too keen and stalled the lathe and broke the tip off the tool. BUT it's absolutely awesome!Just gotta take it easy.
Cheers

Yeah it is a very satisfying feeling having the right tool for the job, knowing how to use the tool and fixing something or making it better.
I would have a guess that many people on here would probably do this as a hobby for the pure satisfaction of it!
Its also one of those hobbies that is actually not about impressing other people its actually about impressing yourself.
Cheers

Making yourself slow down and really look carefully at the problem was just as important as having the tool to fix it. Maybe more important because you could have found another way to fix it if you had to.
