Thread: rear toolpost ..how ?

I have toyed around with machinig a flat section on the rear of the original cross slide but it dosent allow a great deal to be removed before you start to comprimise the thickness of the casting.
Have also considered adding a flat block then placing the tool post on this.

Yes, that's a feasable way to do it . It should not be too difficult a project for a experienced machinist .But for a novice such as me , it would be a interesting project . This is the casting Cross Slide (S-4382)............. but would it be possible to make the same thing out of a chunk of mild steel , instead of paying for the casting...? MIKE

It would although the cast would be easier to machine.

If remember right, one of our members here was doing casting of different things and advertised here about them. I think it was in the Hercus area he was talking about castings and he was down your way. He never did them himself but made the pattern and had the foundry do them.
This maybe an alternative for you as I think cast will be better and as said easier to machine.
