Default Do you reckon these are the same?

Do you reckon these are the same?

I've asked Chronos twice now over 6 days for the measurements, but they haven't gotten back to me.

I wanted to get some more of these holders because I've filled up the four that I have and more would be handy (the more you purchase from Chronos the cheaper they drop in price).

They're usually $50.00 each from H&F but with the 3 day sale, they have dropped to $42.00 each, but it's a big saving from Chronos for the amount that I want......big question is though.....are the same and will fit the QCTP?

    Jim,
To be sure you would need to take one of your holders to H&F and try it on their block.
Unlike the 'Aloris standard' dovetail toolholders, it's unlikely that anyone is going to promise interchangeability with these, that is apart from Chronos who say their holders will fit "all the Dickson-style blocks fitted to Myford lathes", presumable meaning real Dickson S.00 blocks (dimensions here Dickson Quick-set Toolholders).
    Cheers,

    Hi texx,

Yes, but the diagram gives only the general dimensions so you can work out if it will fit your lathe. Clearly the general design of the system is the same, but the detailed dimensions may be different.
On my Dickson S.00 there is a very close fit of all of the V surfaces between the block and a tool holder. Even with a very lightly clamped tool holder I can't see light through any of the four pairs of contact surfaces when viewed from the top, which means tight tolerances on two 'V ways' (put a piece of .002 inch thick paper between any two contact surfaces and light is clearly visible between another pair). I don't know how important that is for the rigidity of tool support but, unless stated explicitly that the toolholders are usable on another system, I would prefer to try it before putting my hard-earned on the line.

    Cheers,
    Bill

    Default QCTP Interchangeability

    Hello Texx,
A few years ago I took one of my Dickson tool holders into H & F and compared it to their then current QCTP and it was a slightly different size and not interchangeable. Hope this helps.

    Thanks for the replies.

I'd like to get 'em, but I might get stuck with them if they don't fit.

I might just order one and see how I go? and if it fits get more.

How many do *you* have for your tool post?
    Cheers,

    Jim

There was a similar thread a few years back, and if I remember correctly, there was several different Dickson QCTP compared and they weren't always interchangable between manufacturers, it's a lucky dip, so don't buy too many right off.

I've got the H&F version, and I think they were $75 when I bought them, so $42 is a lot cheaper than I would have thought. They have been excellent by the way, no problems.

DaveJ did the smart thing and made a heap of them, lot's of work, but better than paying $75 each. His thread is here.. https://www.woodworkforums.com/f65/ma...66/index3.html

Hi Jim, initially I had 8 but they filled up quickly so I got another 8. Hopefully that will be enough. I got he cheapies from CDCO @ $9 each but they are lesser quality than the ones you are using.

    Thanks Ray.

Just bit the bullet and ordered one from the U.K. if worst comes to worst I'll have a hunk of metal to muck around with if it doesn't fit, if it does, I know I can order more.

    Hi Jim,
I use about 10 or 12 holders regularly. Like Dave i made up a batch of BXA holders so i should have been set......but then of course i bought a bigger lathe and the BXA is really too small. As they say, problems of a 1st world country.

Came yesterday, exactly the same, H&F must source them from the same place.
