I think i know what you mean. very quickly withdraw the tool when it stops cutting

I find that it usually stops cutting when it all goes pear shaped. Had a HSS one do it today in 4140; cutting nicely with plenty of cutting oil and it appeared like a hand grenade went off. It just exploded. Just another SNAFU.

It will always give you a sign right before it grabs and goes sour. The instant you hear the motor load up (or sometimes the tool) you need to wind the cross-slide out as fast as you can.
There is a window of about half a second you have to work in, so it always pays to be on your toes while parting.
