Default How do I remove old grease

Any suggestions on a good solvent. Its dirty grease on the gears and mechanism in the lathe carriage. The grease is soft, not the hard crusty kind. I've been using petrol. Is there something better?

    Thanks

Kerosene and an old paint brush.

Keros cheaper, less flammable, gives off less fumes, evaporates slower, and seems to be able to hold more dissolved grease before losing its effectiveness.

    Its what I use anyway.

ive tried a few after banning carby or brake cleaner(cos it appears to be a nasty)
    best so far
ct18(truckwash)... mixed 10:1 soak in it and brush to get penetration....rinse/ with water also good hand cleaner (cleans deisel oil off)
the best one "Simple Green Extreme" a bit expensive but i did a test run on my lathe bed, after 10 minits soaking anda bit of a brush, the grease washed off with a hand squirt bottle full of water
i then use lanotech to stop any rusting

same as diesel...BUT once their up to temp and alight ......run for it...they burn just as violently as petrol.

always use extreme caution when working with inflammable stuff...speaking of which....

Who has a good fire extinguisher in their home garage/shed/workshop?

I dont,...often think about it but never do anything about it...its now in my phone diary

Yep, small 1kg fire ext. in workshop, caravan, boat and both cars.

Beats the hell out of running around in circles looking for something to put out flames.

Fire blanket should be on the list as well.
